A last question and some suggestions

Hi,

During the last weeks I have tested cantabile in detail on 2 different machines. All in all I can say I'm convinced of the concept and all the possibilities it offers. There is one last question I have to clearify (and I'm sure most of you can answer): is it possible (and of course allowed) to have cantabile installed on more than one PC?

Two suggestions for future updates from my point of view:

1) I often use MIDI-Routings and the included MIDI-Filters as they are really mighty. It would be helpful for me to have a small indication an a routing that a MIDI-filter is used (if you close the MIDI-Routing Dialog you don't have a clue if there is a filter activated or not).

2) I partly work with a Laptop and I like to do the programming at home. For this reason I have two MIDI-Keyboards at home and two in the band room (and yes - of course they are different! :hihi: ). It would be very useful to create programmings on "virtual MIDI Ports". These could be the one's used in the Racks and MIDI - Routings. If these virtual ports could be routed to physical ports it would be easy to patch them to the actual MIDI-keyboards.

Thanks and regards, humphrey

You should ask Brad for licensing details. But I think he won't mind two installs if you just use one at a time. You hardly find such a graceful licensing schema these days with a serial number only - so you might have a feel for yourself what's fair in return.

1) I've requested such a midi filter indicator myself too... :tu:

2) I've requested this as well and named it "controller virtualization". :tu:

My idea was to define virtual midi keyboards and controller elements you use for your sessions - then you can just assign the real ones to these virtual interface without messing up the sessions itself.

Not sure what will ever be included with coming versions - just actually there is a focus on Cantabile vst - so I have no clue which changes will make it in the host functionality.

Brad - can you hear us?...

Hi TiUser,

the reason behind is, that I'm using a laptop for sessions and most of the programming. On stage there is a desktop that does the work (Quad Core, tons of RAM and HDDs, RME Hammerfall System, USV) but all this is heavy weighted so I only take it for the gigs.

For other systems there are differnt solutions: f.e. cubase is solving it by using a dongle, spectrasoncis and NI bundle it to the hardware but in these cases you also have the possibility to use the plugs on more than one machine.

To clearify this: it is not my aim to make the software I purchase available for others (why should I? Besides: I make my money as a leader of a department for software development...). So if you ask for my feel: I think it would be fair to have the software available on let's say 2 machines you like only for personal use! If it would be bundled to these machines it would be completely o.k.

I also would want to know if I can use the soft in 2 machines (my laptop which I use live and my main pc in my studio).

About the requests you made, I agree with both 8)

Hi krraqk,

I requested this directly to Brad an hour before. I'll keep you informed if I get a response.

I think you didn't ask for license conditions at all if you intended something else... and the license code contains your name, so it would not be wise sharing that anyway...

My opinion is all protection systems punish the honest paying users. Brad's policy with the serial number is very fair and easy to handle. Just this alone is worth purchasing a license. Where else do you get a 30 day money back guarantee on software? Really - ask Brad if you are unsure if you should get two licenses - or just get two if you feel it's worth supporting TopTen.

Look at Reaper, they do not use any copy protection - hence cracks are unnecessary as well as the overhead maintaining copy protection code and/or paying copy protection makers licenses and/or HW dongles. You have two licensing options with Reaper, a "home/semiprofessional" limited offer and a full commercial license. Both are priced fair and the software is the same version too.

Finally I think software makers are clever when they find HW makers or SW partners to bundle their software with. Reaper comes with OpenLabs workstations, Cantabile (ivory edition) comes with Ivory...

I personally am no professional user but I do some experimenting and I am happy that installation is not bound to machines, os or anything and I just can use my serial number.

I have another legal product I wanted to install in demo mode some time ago but had forgotten that I already had installed the license manager and was online... and the installer was so fast automatically licensing it via challenge response that I had no chance stopping that... That really bothered me.

Once I surprisingly got a free license from a developer just for some bug reports and beta testing. Developers are generous if we treat their work with respect. If we do so they might not punish us with rigid copy protection too.

For the bad boys out there's always a way as there is finally no secure way protecting software...

Hi,

I just got good news from Brad:

Hi Volker,

Thanks for your interest in Cantabile.

In answer to your licensing questions, I'm happy for people to install Cantabile on multiple machines so long as only one is used at a time.
