Oddly enough it sounds best to these ears when running with the 'cab' switch on, but with an IR cabsim in the chain after it.

That's what I found out too - strange.
IMHO, it should be less edgy and bright.

I tried it when it was released and didn't like it. I had allready Amplitube and will continue to use that until I buy a real amp again. Amplifikation Lite has been updated to Ver.1.1.1

Changes on Ver.1.1.1:

- Cabinet & IR Loader engine improved (faster calculation)

- IR Loader bug on some host (returns to internal cabinet) fixed

- Default IR Loader changed to empty

- CPU processing reduce
