Wanna betatest the new Rhino ?

i used to think that ghost envelops would be huge, but now having used it quite a bit i am having second thoughts. the copy/paste feature, the time ruler, and the ease of tabbing back and forth are the reasons.
actually, i now think that syncing the time ruler between all envelops would be more useful -- you could still change it, but there would only be one global instance instead of one per envelop

so just to clarify this new feature, rhino will be able to import wav files
is this for the purpose of extracting that one wave cycle as it does now, but it will do that automatically froma wav sample, because I've never really gotten that single wave import to work
or will thi sbe more Cronox-like where it plays out the length of the sample?
and just to be a bother, I'm assuming thd old DX7 sysex file import will be improved a little to get rid of those envelope induced clicks?
i've been playing around more and more with other synths and when i come back to rhino i'm always a little amazed at just how big and airy and a little edgy it is. i've been working with synths that are happy to produce one sound and when i get back to rhino and hear all the layering and real morph power, let's just say i'm really glad i have it
and then for Tick to keep pushing it forward and esp. after hearing that 20 units a month is a good month, i'm really grateful and appreciative of these efforts and all my best to you.

wrench,
It is a bit cronox-like, but you define your multisample in an external text file, that points to one or several wav files. With this system it is quite easy to convert soundfonts, but also akai and kurzweil files.
Have you tried the wav-import tutorial for the single-cycle thing ? You can download it as pdf from my site.
Regarding the dx7 fixes, yeah, I have to correct that as well... Thanks for reminding me

yes, hats off to tick and all the devs here at KVR. I can be a bit negative at times; but nonetheless, i really appreciate this communities efforts.
wrench, the single cycle clip is for the FFT wave tool. the two keys to success are (1) is has to be mono, so do the stereo to mono split first (2) it needs to be a single cycle. to get that, i zoom way in and start at a zero+ crossing, thru a zero-crossing, and end at a zero+ crossing (~).
i can walk you step by step thru the process with freeware wav editor audacity; PM me is you are still stuck.
EDIT: actually, come to think of it tick, this processing *is* a bit of a pain. why cant rhino pick a single cycle from any wav file (stereo or mono). heck, just pick any zero crossing from the either channel.

Why would you want Rhino to pick the cycle for you? You have to do SOME work! Waveforms have different amounts of harmonics in different spots unless it's a static wave. For example, if you sample a Rhodes piano early in the wave the result will be rich harmonics. However, is you choose a cycle late in the decay it will sound more sine-like due to the decreased harmonic content. A smart programmer will use this to his advantage.
If you choose the early cycle it could be run through a LPF to change the tone. If you choose the late cycle, your best choice for varing the tone would be to use FM. Or you could cycle through several different imports using the envelopes.
Another trick is to use a wave several cycles long. The result is unexpected and can be useful for a spectrum wave subtly layered behind another.
I think the additive wave import is perfect the way it is!

daniel is right in his thinking; and what i said is misleading.
When i say, 'let rhino find it', I did not mean 'instead of' the current capability, i meant 'in addition to'. I was thinking that the sample would be either a static wav (no envelop or modulation over time) or a pre-clipped (but not single cycle) portion of a dynamic sample. because, in any wav editor it is extremely easy to clip out a portion of the sample anywhere within the modulation/decay cycle; the tedium is in jumping thru all the hoops (stereo to mono, zooming into to the single cycle level, finding the zero crossings). I am not suggesting to alter the current capability, just to augment it with a simplistic option; which would perhaps be invoked by attempting to load a stereo wav (which is currently a no no).
Actually, now that i understand the rules i would be inclined to use the single cycle mono option anyway; however, it was not intuitively obvious to me and took a lot of trial/error to finally get it.

Hey, no offense intended! Get used to the mono wave thing as the new feature uses mono waves, also.
Mono uses half the memory of stereo, is easier to loop and allows for easier panning using Rhino's filters. I keep Wavelab in mono mode and record directly to it. Most multi track recorders also have a mono wave export option, also.
If you just love stereo, record a stereo split wave. Copy and paste each side to seperate mono waves and save as R and L. Create seperate Text files (that's how you'll get your own waves into Rhino with the update) and then load into two different osc's. Then run the two samples through different filters and pan them hard R and L. Once this is done you can save the patch as a template and not do it again.
A lot of great stuff is coming soon!

You write upgrade instead of update. Does this imply that 1.10 won't be free? Not that I think you don't deserve it, but I'm just curious.Big Tick wrote:Hi folks,
I'm making progress with a new Rhino upgrade.
Anyway, I'm really excited about the new features and am looking forward to the next version.

Nah. The update / grade / whatever will be free.Fette Töle wrote: You write upgrade instead of update. Does this imply that 1.10 won't be free? Not that I think you don't deserve it, but I'm just curious.

Great to hear. But as I said: I would consider a modest upgrade fee just fair.Big Tick wrote:Nah. The update / grade / whatever will be free.Fette Töle wrote: You write upgrade instead of update. Does this imply that 1.10 won't be free? Not that I think you don't deserve it, but I'm just curious.

shh! things always get really quiet on this forum just before Tick releases something amazing. i say we don't interrupt him and let him keep working.

OK. The external wav loading is done and working fine now. But refactoring the user interface (to extend the skin features) is a bigger mess than initially expected
