Best Clavinet Samples or VSTi?

I believe that you hardly find a better clavinet than the one in Kontakt (3 or 4).

I've said that before in an identical thread. Got beat up bad for it.


It has going for it a fantastic release characteristic which is scary realistic if you set it right, your hand comes off the key and it's like 'holy shit that's a real clav'. It's a very tweakable instrument with a lot of scripting enabled, and very particular EQ when first opened, or that's my experience anyway. So it might not seem like the best instant gratification ultimate solution to the clav problem...

Oh yes!, I forgot that K4 comes with the old "Electric Pianos" library. You probably won't need to buy the Scarbee one.

Because I already own N.I. Elektrik Piano, I've only used it once for the rhodes samples, completely forgot or didn't realise it has a Clavinet set, I've also got the K4 crossgrade on it's way - so will be selling my EP and use the EP set in Kontakt, so I'm all set then sample wise already

Although it's nice to know it's a rated VSTi for Clav...

So I'll check it out again next time I go on my studio, but I'm also going to check all the suggestions on the PM stuff and compare the sound/playability,

I'm far from Rich, just have been buying all the sounds & synths(VSTi & Emulations of fave hardware in VST format)) I have always wanted and learning about it all is part of it(I.e. what instrument or synth made them sounds on my favourite records), I only buy secondhand(like Elektrik Piano of Ebay) and Sales/Promotions, I'm very close to not buying any more sounds/synths at all...

Future purchases - Mr Ray Mk III, ZD6 - Die Funkie Machine, Shioitor, Upgrade my Ace to XL(when U-He has it done) and that's it(I hope)...unless I get some gear lust

It's taken me 5 years to build my studio/synths/library. I have been working most of the time, I'm not rich enough like some people on here to just sit in a studio 5/6/7 days a week, that's rich ...I only get a few hours a week at the minute in the studio!

Trouble is I've been on here learning and buying stuff(no-brainers, kvr marketplace, ebay 2nd hand etc) and at the same time been working alot too, sometimes we buy VSTi synths etc we are not happy with so we buy another to do the same job, basically I've had more time to buy than actually use them, so sometimes I miss what software I've bought can actually do...

I know I've nearly got all my bases covered now, I.e. I want a sound/instrument, I can call it up!

But then there is the advancements in VSTi sound synthesis/techology/better samples to deal with too...

The VSTi's getting released these days blow the early/mid 00's out of the water!

The good thing is with the stuff coming out now, it's getting so much better and with near perfect realism, when I first heard VSTi's(2002ish) I thought they all sucked - Not so any more! But I'm almost totally happy with my set-up

Hopefully after the summer(I've been working 80 hours this week), I will have time to use my studio again and use the stuff I've bought!

PS that was a playfull rant I took no offense really...

Alchemy upgrade, Shioitor, Mr Ray MKIII, BFD Jazz & Funk Expansion, 'maybe' VB3 & ZD6 are the only things on my shopping list this year....Most I will try and source in sales/secondhand!

Hopefully when I'm no longer working 80 hours/7 days a week I will have the time to use what I've bought fully! When you work 80 hours per week you tend to have a spare bit of cash for a plugin or two... Just not the time to use them

But after these purchases that's it! Unless a better plugin comes along than what I got for the job, then I'll upgrade or sell what I'm currently using!

For the most you are right, but i still use Vaz 2010, released in 2001 and it still holds up against the new super analog circuit modeling vsti's that use 10 times the cpu. I haven't yet needed a "better" sounding VA synth than vaz 2010 !
It really says something about the skills of the developer Martin Fay.

I've just recently reinstalled Vaz+ as I've heard some good s**t done with vaz synths, I bought this right at the start of setting up my pc studio, just used to use the presets at first, then sacked it(uninstalled) for predator in 2006ish..

Now I know more about synthesis I realise this is a good synth, but to my ears not in the same league as minimonsta or ace for it's basic sound,

but to my ears sounds no different to Sylenth1/Korg monopoly that they all rave about too on kvr,

I still think the preset browser sucks though on Vaz+, the upgrade price was expensive too to get to the better versions...hence I still have vaz plus...

Believe me, I love modelled vintage keys and appreciate the effort to save memory and load times, and was all over the ZD6 for a while, but it really lacks something, not springy/punchy/woody enough, fidelity is just plain not good, though decent enough at emulating the mute mode of the Clavinet. But you're not always going for muted Clav, right?

NI now offers the original Scarbee Clavinet and Pianet ported to Kontakt or Kontakt Player - fantastic effects, beautifully sampled, AWESOME (not just decent) mute mode, release noise, etc etc.

Now if you already have Elektrik Piano that's great - but bear in mind it's a deprecated product and no longer supported, in addition to which the Clav is an E7 (road case version), not a D6 which is what was used by the majority of pioneering players like Stevie and Herbie and yes, you can really hear the difference.

I bought the entire Scarbee Vintage Keys product at $169 US; how can you lose with the NI prices lately? And no, I don't work or shill for NI, but I *do* know vintage sound, having played and loved funk since 1976.

Cheers, I just sold my N.I. Ep because it's in the new Kontakt 4 library, got in on the crossgrade deal, I'll check that scarbee, I'm actually into Electro/Breaks but into using Funk/Electro Funk/Urban/Hip Hop sounds over my beats, trying to make my own sound. When I grow up(lol) I'll probably try and do some full on Funk, I love it, from Cameo thru to Early Kurtis Blow type joints, but for now just into trying to fuse funk overtones with breaks/electro(not the house type)...

Kinda like Deekline/Beat Assasins is my aim but with my own signature...I'm still learning, it's not easy

Hi,
personnally i found the
Scarbee one on kontakt the best
Second is the one from pianoteq specially with the wha pedal
3rd is from uvi
But all of them are basseless even if i put a bass on eq it's not the same as a good real bass clavinet.

All others that i have tried are just horrible.

All this "recorded with top gears etc..." are simply bullshit listen to this simple guys who has sampled this own clavinet =>
Major company are really just in the wrong side...
