Why don't you ask Apple?

The whole point of OS X is that it's running on specific hardware instead of thousands of different combinations.

The wise words, "It's not what's said, but what isn't said" come to mind here.
You (tomg) or the snide, yuppy looking writer of that useless article, have done nothing even close to help in computer development, than Apple has.
You should thank Apple for giving you Windows 7, as you wouldn't have it without Apple.
Cant let you away with that one - You have BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) to thank for OSX 10.x :-)
Apple "adopted" it and added Aqua GUI on top.
Xerox came up up the idea of a mouse controlled GUI. Apple comes along and adopts it as they do most things. Apple didnt give us Windows 7 attall. Before OSX, OS9 was developed by Microware Systems Corporation. Apple are a marketing company, they dont invent.

Apple is hardware company first, a software company second and a marketing company last. If they don't invent something they certainly do improve upon the concept and make it the best that it can be. As for micro soft, they certainly aren't the innovators, atleast not anymore.

If it rejects flash I'm afraid not yet... :hihi:

Going slightly back in time, let's see what The Steve has to say about this subject:

Methinks rumours of the Mac's impending demise are greatly exaggerated, as usual. Once the WWDC dust has settled, we'll surely see what's in store for the Mac end of things.

And I would hardly say that my 2-year-old iMac is "long-in-the-tooth." It makes me look like Methuselah. ;)

(But compared to the current models, it is from late Cretaceous. :hihi:)

Oh, well that's fine by me. I guess I have noticed the fancy logo.

R.I.P. Macintosh then.

I just wish Apogee would write drivers for the f@#$ing Duet.

Or if Jobs would just allow people to install OSX on a PC safely and legally.

I think the iPad, iPhone, etc... are good for the Mac's future. The money Apple is making on these products is putting them in good financial shape (not that I follow that kind of stuff...), keeping the company healthier than just focusing on the Mac alone.

Now, if the desktop or laptop form factor becomes obsolete due to the iPad or next generation i-whatever, yes, that might be the end of the Mac AND WIndoze-based PC's alike.

And really bad for people like me who'd like to be able to go to barnes and noble, get a cup o joe and read (and I do read  ) magazines

Post

Yeah, me too. I own a Mac but don't own an iPad or any cell phone and no electronic reader. Regular books and magazines rule!

as Macs only account for around 5% of the computer market, thats a wise buisness decision to concentrate on the geek gadgets.

In addition to the financial side of things, it's ultimately speculative but there's been buzz for years that Apple will try to progressively integrate it's technology between the mobile and PC platforms. Most of the other stuff from tech fortune tellers and rumor machines after recent WWDC is along those lines. Some of this integration is going on already but no one would confuse the platforms right now. But maybe in the future, who knows.

I think the desktop/laptop form factor will not be obsolete until a fairly distant horizon past which no one can predict, but maybe they evolve into something a little different than we've seen before.

What an hilariously bone-headed article. Look at the first point on "the dock". Windows has had a taskbar running along the bottom of the desktop for about 15 years. The one on the bottom of Win7 is simply an evolution of the one in Win95.
