i just checked out the palm t, online...blimey, you're right...they are indeed very similar :D....just how is life for one who has seen it all ??

despite being able to sign in at your doctors surgery and all the amazing benefits of owning your 'palm' you aren't willing to concede that apple has taken something that seemed to infuriate you and improve upon the concept

all those poor, poor people who now own one
As Im 47, I have seen plenty of changes in tech along the way. I dont own Microsoft phone or PDA. I choose the best thing for the job. Apple has taken marketing to a religious level where you cant see the issues. They could have used an X86 CPU for ipad but they chose to use A4. Didnt they make that mistake with the IBM CPU years ago? This means no backward compatibilty with OSX and little advantage. It does of course mean you have to buy all the apps again. I look forward to seeing all the ipads on Ebay in a few months time when the novelty has worn off and people realise that its just another gadget they didnt need :-)

Edit - I just had a look - jailbroken ipads on Ebay already :-)
i couldn't care less about apple's marketing...like you, i chose the best thing for the job but, more importantly , the best thing for me

as for buying apps again..i've never bought a single 'app' from apple other than logic and , as i've said, any apps i might buy would likely better my logic experience, not force me to re-buy anything

and why do you look forward to seeing ipads on ebay ??? better to be proven right, even at the expense of the loss of other individuals...and you berate apple for how you believe they view people and the market

again, you still have no interest in the ipad, other than to argue against it....how about getting back on topic...once again, i ask you, do you think that apple, in prioritising the ipad for the moment, have ditched the mac ??
These things never end well. I was trying to show how history repeats itself. Yes they have ditched the Mac.
Yes they have ditched the Mac

BOOM, there it is...that's pretty on-topic...how's it feel ?? :hihi: :hihi: j/k

history does often repeat itself, but still some of us resist being so jaded.....maybe this time, things'll be different......i know where my money's going

thanks, however, i now have a heads-up and am poised to put my macbook on ebay at the first sign...you may have saved me some serious money :hihi: :hihi:

in fact, i have passed the info onto my flatmate, who wishes to ditch all his windows angst, but he's just layed out a few grand for a new bathroom

Surely a self fulfilled prophesy on your part? The thread is asking about the end of the Mac, Im sure that would be upsetting to those of a Jobsian nature

Except for the fact that Intels CPUs were always at least twice as fast as IBMs offerings.

If he had chose Intel from the get go, the transition from OS9 to OSX would have been simple. I remember Mac owners being horrified when he changed over.

You can thank Bill Gates for saving Apple's bacon all those years ago. Did he do it just to avoid anti-trust complaints? Perhaps. But if he hadn't done it, your favourite computer/design boutique would've sunk.

Steve Jobs is terrific at spotting "insanely great" ideas, and at exploiting and marketing them. His company is a magnet for amazing product/industrial design. They're well-suited to being at the cutting edge of computer and electronics design. But their 5+% percent of the market is their niche to have and to hold. Their ideas are meant to lead the way, and then be consumed and re-developed into broader options for those of use who want more value for our dollar. I can wait a year or two for the trickle-down of cool design and pretty UIs as long so I can afford it.

I applaud those of you who do consume Apple products faithfully: You're financing the innovations I'll be enjoying down the road, without the premium price tags.

Im glad you know whats best for Apples customers. Keep up the Jobsian attitude. I dual boot Windows 7 with OSX 10.6 but rarely use OSX. Arnt you off topic here?

i don't know what's best for others...just me

that's logic, running on osx...suits me down to the ground

if i were able to get a supported version of os x, running easily, i might consider getting a top spec alienware games machine to run it on....

Will never happen, see above:

Apple DID allow others to license the OS and to design their own hardware to run it on, back in the mid-90s. The Result? Apple got handed their ass when it came to advancing the platform: the other players were giving people more of what they wanted in a hardware purchase (like: more connections/ports, easy-to-install hardware upgrades, standardized connectors, etc.) and Apple didn't like being shown up, so they withdrew the licenses for the next OS upgrade.

This is why they likely won't license the OS to anyone else, or allow you to legally install it on your Hackintosh.

Well, that's a 15 year old OS, innit? And computers have evolved from 16 to 64 bits in that time

Apple dropped support for G5 Macs that are only 4 years old with the Snow Leopard upgrade. My five year old iPod Video hasn't seen an OS upgrade in about three years. When I was using my first-gen Intel iMac, upgrading from Tiger to Leopard caused software as simple as my favoured text editor to stop working. Why? Why because Apple wants to live in the shiny future rather than support the past for too long. Not a very "Green" perspective, in my opinion...
