no, it wont. the mac isnt a closed-and-gated ecosystem the way the ipad is.

exactly...that's why this whole thread is bullshizzle....if they ever get powerful enough, and hold full os's (the new macpad, for instance) then the mac/pc will get it's lifeline

seemingly, since they do the same thing, they are the same thing, so ProTools didnt replace it in the first place.

everyone on kvr and the equivalent video editing forums will have nothing left to create with....

time to invest in hardware multitracking or bespoke video editing machines, i guess

First you said you couldn't create on the "cloud" taking video editing as an example. If we don't have powerful desktop computers video editing is impossible. And by a genius strike of irony Youtube released that on the "cloud" yesterday. Talk about timing.

Then you said it was just a toy (in which you're probably right) implying it would never replace desktop video editing. And that is exactly what people said about Protools when it first arrived. It was incredibly cumbersome.It was actually two programs,one for recording and one for editing and it took like 45 seconds to switch between them. The first PT was 4 channels only. Later it was 16 channels but you needed 4 HDs for that (and incredibly expensive ones at that). And where would you back up all that data to? There was no good backups back then.
It was a fun expensive toy.

Cue 15 years later. PT is everywhere and even that is being replaced by cheap "homecomputers" without any extra hardware.

Of course the Youtube video is just a first draft so to speak. But it was incredibly ironic how you said you couldn't edit video on the "cloud" when you can since yesterday. Still don't see the connection ?

youtube video editing is not the video editing i was talking about....send me a pm, when hollywood cuts its latest with this service or youtube offers render-farm function for the next pixar release, and i'll concede

as for protools.....it could have come in ten programs with a minute time to switch between them and it STILL would have been more advanced for recording and editing than what it replaced...protools didn't replace the 2 inch 24 track, immediately because of cost and people already investing 1000's in older technology....it was a completely different time...no one would have believed that a whole studio could fit into a rucksack and were likely skeptical of this new paradigm...we've blown through that paradigm now and so many more, that tech huge tech advances are the 'norm

even at 4 tracks, protools offered functionality and editing features that far surpassed what could be done with analogue tape....in this case, the 'toy' was actually far more advance than the existing tech of the day...your youtube example, however, in the light of existing tech that we have today IS a 'toy'

maybe many 'stick in the muds' thought protools was a toy....but i would guess the majority didn't, hence why protools actually DID replace the 24-track in most studios

for 'cloud' youtube editing to do the same, it has to offer us more, not less, than we have now.....

i'm not saying it couldn't happen, but i'm gonna stick my neck out and say that if we ever do end up editing movies , professionally, online it will have nothing to do with youtube

but the obvious thing would be the recoding of software.....os is just that, it's an os....it's full , if it lets me do what i need on it, such as create (something that the digital vending machine that is 'ipad' seems to still want us to do)

It's all about the money. I don't think apple are ready to turn their backs on billions of dollars of revenue.



There are definitely plenty of old school mac fanbois who seem to take Steve Jobs far too seriously and get very jealous when he gives his love to the other apple children.

It's all a bit tedious for those of us who just happen to prefer macs as the tool for certain tasks.
