"iPad gouges netbook sales" -- the thing's been available for barely TWO months, so what does this ridiculous chart show?

(Especially since "Q2 2010 figures are forecasts" -- of course they are!!! WTF? )

Considering that netbooks are generally regarded as cheap garbage (I have absolutely no interest in them), would anyone be surprised if the splashy (but not flashy!) iPad outsold them???

Good, multitouch tablets are really cool devices and more choice/cheaper prices can only be better. For example, my iPad makes a great cheap alternative to the jazz mutant lemur (touchosc is awesome). Tablets are great news for musicians.

Considering that netbooks are generally regarded as cheap garbage (I have absolutely no interest in them), would anyone be surprised if the splashy (but not flashy!) iPad outsold them???

The first graph shows the proportion of portable computer sales taken by all netbooks and pads together. Still pretty small @ 20%. Portable sales exceed desktop sales but not by a large margin at this stage I gather. Anyone who thinks these things are going to make other classes of machine obsolete can see what inroads they have made thus far.

If you think back on the history of personal computers the early machines were pretty expensive (>10K $ in todays money) and had limited applications outside a business context. Yuppies who bought an IBM PC for home use had to convince themselves that being able to alphabetise their recipe collection justified the investment.

Word processing and other productivity apps start to offer something useful for anyone writing/studying and the emergence of graphics apps and even desktop publishing made some impact on home users. Still, the really compelling reason for nearly everyone owning a computer doesn't arrive until the internet hits the fan. Now, internet access is incredibly useful/diverting - in fact indispensible in many cases - for a huge range of people and fortunately computers are dirt cheap compared to 30 years ago.

One thing though - the vast numbers of users who have a PC of some stripe primarily for internet access - how many really need to be using a full featured desktop or laptop for this? And how much of the time would the extra facilities beyond those afforded by a lightweight portable device be necessary? I am guessing that a lot of casual browsing/shopping activities could be done with as portable as a smart phone or something intermediate between that and a laptop. Obviously bucks are being thrown at this niche and the expectation is that it will become much more sigificant.

Here's what pisses me off. We watch sci-fi movies like Avatar and see devices like very advanced iPads (like when the head douchebag takes some image/file off his main screen on to a portable screen to bring with him by dragging it to the new device, like Eric from Spectrasonics did in his Omnisphere example) and we all go, "ooo, cool." Then when a company does starts making something that approaches what we see in sci-fi we trash it because... well I don't know why. Nerds cry they want open systems, yet the fact of the matter is that those systems don't work well for most people in the real world. My wife went though half a dozen smart phones before the iPhone came out. Did her other phones have all or more features that the iPhone had? Sure, but they were implemented so sh!ttily that they were barely usable. My friend had a Droid and she said it was a total pos. She got rid of it and went iPhone.

Is the iPad for everyone? Of course not. If you want to sit and type a lot or edit large image or audio files, you'd be silly to buy an iPad. But if you want something that does things like the TouchOSC app does in a reasonably priced elegant package, when then there you go. The best part is we don't even know what the iPad is yet, but we will when the killer app is developed for it.

Stuff that makes you go "ooo,cool" usually turns out to be a POS when used for normal stuff. Its not for nothing that iphone adverts show "some steps removed for clarity" at the bottom of the screen in small writing, this means they have edited out the swearing and confusion which took an hour to get round. This is why the "its simple" version is shown
