Don't forget the Newton's cameo in "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory," where a different Steve (Seagal, still a decent action star at that time) used a Newton to alert a friend (who then alerted the government) about the dastardly doings onboard the train.egbert wrote:The technology has moved on obviously but Apple has had no marketed products in this space since the last editions of the Newton which - from all reports - actually getting to be decent products after some embarrassment with the failings of the early models (eg being lampooned on Doonesbury).
And, honestly, the iPad has one HUGE advantage compared to the Newton: it's "ready for prime time" out of the gate!
And, to a great extent, he's prioritized things quite nicely: first the iPod, then the iPhone, a few more iPod & iPhone tweaks, and finally the iPad, followed quickly by a major iPhone upgrade. All the steps taken prior to the iPad have been pretty monstrous successes, and I see the iPad fully continuing the trend. All along, the actual computers have bobbed along quite nicely, with a few minor stumbles of note (the Cube, and the initial Intel transition) as well as a few infuriating decisions (especially regarding various ports, and a penchant for routinely choosing "lesser" graphics cards) and occasional software SNAFUs to keep us on our toes.egbert wrote:I think Steve would have more of his personal vanity invested in the success of this product than than he has in anything else Apple are flogging.
I applaud the iPad, but I'm not yet excited by it personally, because I'm still too "computer-oriented" in both work and play for something that would still be quite a step down from a robust desktop or upper-echelon laptop. (I was never excited by the iPod, and I still am rather "blah" about smartphones in general, for much the same reason: they're not as capable as computers yet for my uses. Using the iPod simply doesn't compare to using the full version of iTunes et al -- in fact, with my GARGANTUAN music collection, it's quite a hindrance -- and, in general, I hate phones: I basically use mine to send text messages and play a few simple, time-wasting games. An iPhone [or similar] would be overkill. But all of the pharmacists with whom I work LOVE their iPhones!!! And I haven't had to help them fix* anything with the phones... yet...
(*NOT being bothered to fix stupid computer or, a-hem, mobile-device issues makes a very happy camper!!!)

With apologies if the article has been posted to this thread already. Continuing the saga ...

The comments attached to the article are quite interesting / relevant. Sure, for the average user a desktop does not make a great deal of sense, but for "power users" (CAD / 3D / video / audio) it's a different story. I guess with just one manufacturer building systems, Apple users have a bit more to be concerned about unless Apple allows third party systems
Peace,
Andy.

One might think this was obvious, but apparently two decades of this topic hasn't changed things much.mcnoone wrote:Nothing comes closer to an idiot, then one who would associate intelligence by what computer one uses.
