I notice that only the Compact edition is listed as being able to be used with Live. Is that going to stay that way?
Or is there the possibility that buying one of the larger versions would entitle one to the Compact set and Live mappings too?

yes, the Compact edition is the only live version. The two bigger versions are programmed differently, so would not work with the Live mappings, as you suggest.

Any chance of making the larger library compatible with the free Kontakt player? Or is that not possible?

it's perfectly possible, but probably not viable considering the Kplayer license fee and the number of libraries we'd sell after it's already been on the market for 2 years.
