Limiting the automation of the synth in question would also bend the competition more towards traditional music forms and appriciation for "studio wisardry" and electronic music would be left out.
Primarily, music should be sincere. Automation needs to be applied when it assists to express your thought and your feelings. Otherwise it's not music...

I have found a few time to participate in this contest :wheee:

My track: Memory

Host: Zynewave Podium Free 2.31 (Gentoo Linux/WINE-1.44)

12 x Basic_64

FX: Luxonix LFX-1030, JB Barricade, Kjaernus Classic Limiter and Reverb, ReaEQ, NuBi Spinner (from NuBi Plus Free Package, download HERE), Logana FX.

P.S. If I lose this contest I can choose a synth for following competition! :hyper:

UPD: Screenshot.
Hi, I like the way new elements are introduced, the chord changes flow smoothly,
classical elements don't fight against modern sounds, skills are applied musically,
without being a distraction from the themes, and then a seemless and well executed
conclusion. 8) VERY 8)

If I would take song and randomly automate all parametres of a synth, wouldn't that be music and wouldn't that express some thoughts or feelings? Because it is impossible to do otherwise. How would you arrange and create sounds consciously without expressing your thoughts and your feelings?

Music making is more often than not non conscious effort. Sure you have some quide lines that you apply through the process and have a idea what things should sound like along the way, but most of the time the song changes shape through trial and error and even by accidents.

So even unconscious sounds you are making will constitute music the second you recognise it as such and apply your self to it.

Hmm... I agree :)

I had some fun with this.

http://mickrippon.com/mp3/mickrippon_rainbowtrain.play

Basic64 was a tricky VST to work with. The presets sounded like rayguns rather than instrumental!

Artistically I wanted to make it Basic64-sounding as I could; I wanted to make it obvious I was using this VST. So I kept it light on the effects and chose a very musical retro game genre.

Technical Details

- Written using Renoise 2.5
- XRNS here: http://mickrippon.com/xrns/mickrippon_rainbowtrain.xrns
- All 10 instruments are an instance of Basic64 (obviously)
- All Internal Renoise FX, limited to
1. EQ5/10
2. mpReverb2
3. Delay
4. Bus Compressor
- Some automation was used to change some of the parameters inside the VST and to change the stereo presence of the bass in the breakdown. Some panning automation. I automated EQ(2k) as well for one bar in the melody.

- I avoided the Renoise filters because I thought that may have been cheating!

Anyway, hope you enjoy it as much as I had fun writing it.

Regards,
Mick :)

V'ger, really nice work scoping out the Google sites and the Archive.org site. The list you set up on the left side of the Google site is EXACTLY what I was looking for, personally; you have the time remaining for the current OSC and can also look ahead to the following ones. For example, I either forgot - or didn't realize - that Sonata was up next! Much easier to find out what's coming up by looking in this one location rather than searching through the various comp threads, looking for that. Very cool. The Archive site is also very nice from the standpoint of loading, downloading, playing, etc., as you mentioned, but the links from the Google site to the 4shared site (or wherever) seem quite straightforward also. :tu:

hi
had a couple hours to spare so I figured I'd have some fun.
The result is one of the most odd tracks I've ever made... hehe

anyway, submitted for your amusement:
http://www.4shared.com/audio/Uk_rRtj2/m ... T0N1N.html

uses Reaper3, 12 basic64, 2 reaEQ, 1 reacomp, 1 readelay. I kept it basic as per the name of the synth, so very little efex, or production.

also 'cause I'm lazy and don't have a lot of time. :P

Consider it open source, here's the reaper file:
masonbee-Z3R0T0N1N

the drum sounds I was able to coax from a synth with no FM kind of surprised me. I'm sure there's a manual somewhere, but I didn't check. Couldn't figure out the peculiarities of the modulation system, but maybe that's part of the fun of this one.

ok, there it is.
Have fun with it if you want.

Mickrip, Z3rotonin, I'm not sure if you are entering the competition or not... since you have the tracks ready, it'd be a pity if you wouldn't!
Please refer to this thread's first page for instructions :)
I say this because I see you gave links to your tracks, while they should be uploaded to the proper folder after naming them in a certain way. So if you haven't officially entered, I certainly invite you to - it's fun :)

And I hope your tracks suck, so I will not lose again :P

Post

yes, I uploaded to the site posted, in the format prescribed, along with a similarly named .txt file.

is that not the method?

I'll have to read it again... sorry if I got it wrong.

...awww, crap!

sorry, mannie... are those your petunias? :dog:

well, consider any of the three posts I have made in the past hour as the one which announced my upload.

:D

Oh, and Mac, regarding the suck quotient of my track: :hihi: You may be in luck.

I do not listen to any track till it's time to vote, but I don't think I'll be that lucky if your level is that of the average OSCrian ;-)

I uploaded them to http://www.4shared.com/account/dir/XnOa ... lenge.html - I followed the naming convention (title+author) as well as the text file.

I hope that's all I was meant to do.

Mick :)

Well, actualy you were also required to send me the 350-euro registration fee, but we can settle that later in paivate :P  :hihi:

Seriously, it's just that you guys gave a direct link to your tracks, which normally doean't happen (it's not wrong at all, I had just never seen that before) so I thought you might have misunderstood something, it would have been a pity not to have you in the competition :)
