Which genres of music would you most associate with workstation sounds - pop..?

General MIDI-ish "one-man-band" arrangements, with a hardware controller.

But ALWAYS ~ missing the essential: ukalaylee!!!

To me, workstation sounds means a variety of faithful (or almost) acoustic, electric and synth sounds to be used on any genre (if there is genre specific sounds).

I would say :
- acoustic pianos (grands and uprights)
- acoustic guitars (nylon, steel, twelve strings)
- acoustic bass
- ethnic instruments
- electric pianos
- electric basses
- electric guitars
- pop brass
- strings (hybrid, acoustic, vintage strings machines)
- orchestral sounds (woodwinds, strings, brass)
- bells and mallets
- synth leads
- synth pads
- synth basses
- synths poly
- acoustic drumkits
- electronic drumkits
- percussions

What else ?

Providing a workstation type bank is certainly something we will think about. I think part of my problem is that I'm not entirely clear on what workstation sounds are Are there any sounddesigner(s) who've worked with Alchemy whose sounds you would characterise as being workstation-esque - perhaps John Lehmkuhl? (I know he's done a lot of sound design for many HW keyboard manufacturers). Which categories of sounds would you most like to see? Which genres of music would you most associate with workstation sounds - pop..?

That would be great Ben, I'm sure if you had one done it would be the most popular expansion. The beauty of workstation sounds is that they are pretty generic and can be used for any kind of music really. Triton, Motif, Fantom, or Hypersonic / Halion Sonic.

- They cover a vast range of the most popular instruments ranging from brass to ethnic instruments, pretty much covering a GM standard.

- At their core, they are always dry with effects added after (not actually built into the sound).

It's more than just the sounds, it's the approach. No VSTi lets you play four parts of the band at once - lead, bass, rhythm and drums, for example.

In most cases, your sequencer should give you this option and in other cases there are already other options that allow this in software. So it's just about wanting these (high quality) sounds in a software option.

No, it doesn't, not in the same way as the Motif or similar. Sequencing lets you create huge multilayered compositions, but you can't play a drum groove simultaneously alongside chord recognized backings and noodle away with both hands - one for bass, one for lead.

For example, any drum GM map will mean to play a standard 8-bar, you're playing C, C sharp and F sharp for the hi-hat. You can't noodle away a bass accompaniment and a lead at the same time - at least, not without three hands. It's about using two hands' worth of MIDI data in a workstation-like manner.

You could trigger a drum groove with a single note, but that means you either lose the note for general playing or you'll keep stopping and starting the groove every time you hit that key.

Prove me wrong - I'd love it, really, it's a genuine question. I've been looking for this kind of solution for ages, and if there's a way of creating that 'Tyros' effect with what I already have, then it'd be great.
