You can download Amplitube 2 DUO (2 guitar amps.2 cabs, 2 stomps, 2 mics included) by registering for free at Obedia (that's how i got mine):
http://www.obedia.com/Amplitube.cfm

NI Guitar Rig 4 Go (1 amp, 3 stomps and more included) at:
http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/ ... /?page=754

There's also Amplitube X-Gear Free (2 guitar amps and 1 bass amp) at:
http://www.ikmultimedia.com/Main.html?g ... /index.php
This one is just a standalone version but i think that after install and register it you can download any version available in your IK Multimedia user area, uninstall X-Gear Free and install the "new" version...it will become available as VST/AU...(don't forget to keep your serial number and authorization code from X-Gear Free, that's all the information you need).

I've been pretty happy with Wurr Audio's GreenMachine Amp II: http://www.greenmachine.pwuq.de/Wurr_Au ... nload.html

For an interesting free 'distortion box,' the Compact Distortion from Slim Slow Slider is cool.

It's got some filtering controls on it, which are interesting.

The Compact Distortion isn't 'state-of-the-art,' but it sounds really good for being a freebie; and it makes for a lot of tonal possibilities.

It sounds pretty good in regular mode, and even better in oversampling mode, but with a bit of a CPU hit.

Waves Offers a one year free license for GTR Solo. It's a great practice amp, for the price ;)

^^ I tried it, but it was really full of... erm... shit tbh. It had issues installing properly on Vista, and once I got it going it was quite buggy and really a pain to work with. Had issues with it? Or was it smooth sailing?

I spent yesterday testing several of the recommended amps, as well as some of the commercial options.

I'm sticking with FrettedSynth's FreeAmp (I'm using 2SE)- I'm no guitar virtuoso - I just record simple rhythmic licks, but this gives me all the sound-shaping I need, has everything on one page, and is free.

I want to try FreeAmp3, but Frettedsynth's webpage seems to be down. Anyone?

Nay, works fine here; for me the only issue now is the integrated line input :)

Weird... can't see why it flaked out on my system :| It's a "standard" PC, no "exotic" bells or whistles. Aw well, guess it was just not meant to be :D

Mine is a bit more than a standard. As it is old, it requires heavy operating system optimization and setup to make it work properly. I'm always proud when someone thinks I've got a dual core; cause of the workflow and it's speed.
Basically I just strip it off from unnecessary and dangerous things with tweakUI, xp-antispy, regedit, and so on... No need of IE, Media Player and god knows what else :)
I'd also reccommend Win7 over Vista anytime.

But to be of some use, I think you should contact the devs about your issues. They need to know and fix them ;)
