A user over at the Cubase forum has described how to hack into the C 5.5 exe file to change that big ugly new font. Works great. I used another font on my system "Candera". New on the left, old on the right.
My lawyer told me to emphasize that this is for educational purposes only. :)

- Start by copying the Cubase5.exe file to the Desktop. rename it Cubase5_ClassicFont.exe, or whatever.

- Open Cubase5_ClassicFont.exe in your favorite hex-editor. (010 Editor is a nice one)

- Search for "Microsoft Sans Serif". (Or just go directly to the offset mentioned below.)

- You should find 2 occurrences. It's the 2nd one we need to change.
File offset of the string is 0x01497470 in the 32-bit version, and 0x01CD5E00 in the 64-bit version.

- Change it to "MS Sans Serif". This is the 'classic' Cubase font. (Remember to end the string with a trailing hexadecimal zero)

- Save the edited file, move it from the Desktop to the Cubase5 folder.

- Now the font is reverted back to the pre-5.5 font (Which isn't affected by ClearType and doesn't support Cyrillic, I'm afraid Smile )
in the Cubase5_ClassicFont.exe file.

In all seriousness, I like the new (default) font better in that screenshot.

The clunky one on the right that is much harder to read? Just look at the word "Drums". You can't be serious...

Just my 2 cents

This was a big complain from many v5.5 users...
They should thank you at least.

damn you make my day! this is great, I literally hate the 5.5 original fonts.

Some people have too much time :D Now they fiddling with hex editors to change a font
Is not really a showstopper to make music isn't it?

On my system the new font is very good to read, no problem.

No offense to you but it's kinda trolling to denigrate a stranger (the guy who found / worked out this hack) who used his own free time to find a solution to an irritating little problem for other strangers.

Rather than shoot him down for doing that you might want to demonstrate similar behavior. What have you personally contributed to the Internet community and/or your fellow daw users that cost you some of your own free time?

Many thanks for that information !
Finally I can look at Cubase again without the feeling beeing drunk
or needing new eyeglasses. :D

Cheers

Wow, what a stupid remark. If it takes a couple of minutes of hacking to change the font, resulting in a considerbly more functional working environment for hundreds of hours to follow, why not do it? Or are you saying that because you like the font, no-one should dislike it or change it?

Making decisions based on knee-jerk reactions is rarely the best choice. I like to give new things some time before I make a judgement. I prefer to let it settle in my mind first. A lot of people including myself didn't like the new KVR design for example..But now I do and cant even remember the old design.

Having said that I'm already used to the new fonts in Cubase because the difference between those fonts is negligible in any way that truly matters. Move on already.

Well, I tried get used to it, otherwise I would have gone back to version 5.1.1 immediately.
And I don't find the difference between these fonts negligible, and it does matter to me (and apparently other users).

So if you're happy with the new font - great.
I wasn't - but now I am (with the old font).

Now moving on.

Cheers

Well I meant get used to it after a month or so. Not 5 minutes..

Honestly this should only effect people with poor eyesight but I don't think Steinberg should be blamed for that. And going back to a previous version because of a font is hardly moving on.
