Are there any plug-ins that can help make Amplitube sound more like a tube amp?

I've got a Presunus TubePre that I put a better tube in than stock and it does wonders for both guitar and bass.

A little late to the ongoing of this thread - I have the same one. In my case it's more of a "use what fits in the room and is not too expensive" - so I couldn't compare if it was great in comparison to those nice and wonderful toys mentioned. But it sounds good, really, you're right :)

A3 is really good, IMO. But a tube preamp helps alot. I have a UA 710, and it really is a great preamp/DI. It warms the clean signal in a pleasing way. It also plays nice with pedals. I find the pedals in A3 somewhat lacking. I use http://www.mpamp.com/pedal/pedals-sbo.htm and http://www.mpamp.com/pedal/pedals-fgc.htm with great succes.

High gain is still not anywhere what I want. A mic'd amp is still better than anything. Closest one is the Lepou Bogner. That one is sweet with the right impulses (Recabinet is dirt cheap ATM).

Guitar rig's Control room is another great speaker option. I don't really like the amps in Guitar rig (they are better than the last version), but the effects and the control room are really nice.

A third option would be saturation plugs. I like the URS saturation plug for a understated but full sound. It's tube preamp can boost things nicely on guitar before a amp plug. Decapitator is great after the amp sim chain, as a finaly polish. I really like the TG setting. but it's more of a mix tool than a distortion, IMO.

BTW Acustic feedback from Softtube is a great way to have a more authentic tone. It's hard to get it to play just right, but once you get it, it's perfect.

GC holiday 'managers desparation sale'. Built like a tank, easy on the eyes,
and does the job without complaining 8)

I was just about to pm him :) with the same question. I use the tubepre since 6 years, for a singer and for me on guitar and bass, and the 111 Euro I paid are more than worth it. Fell to the floor 2 times in those 6 years, no problem^^. Fantastic value for money.

Had good stuff from both myself, granted they are in the UK so delivery is free but hopefully your country of residence will have a similar sort of valve supplier

Great advice all around. (Hope we don't get too off topic here, but I'm very grateful). The stock tube is some 12AX7 tube too (this is a newbie-nonsense-remark, as only 12AX7s are allowed in the tubepre^^). They say themselves, tubes need to be replaced from time to time, (how dare they :hihi:), so I'll take this as an opportunity now. Let's hope something as nice as Nekro.Machine found is available in ole Germany as well^^. And thanks again, PaulG.

You can use pretty much any which is a 12A... variety Klemperer, but since 12AX7's are the most gain blessed then it probably is best sticking with them really. Manuals always say only use "X" but honestly can use others if you so wish. Susiwong will know ov tube/valve heaven's germanys way i think :)

thanks! You see the disadvantages of having only software, no real good amp, and just this tube-pre^^.
So back to topic then - at least the tubepre sounds really nice for its price with guitars and basses :)

Lots of good advice, I was also going to say get the best signal into it without an additional plugin for best results. Got money to burn, the UA preamp mentioned (or something like a 610) are EXCELLENT "in front" and I can look right over and see my TubePRE and a copy of "Guerrilla Home Recording" and feel good about getting excellent results with gear that costs that much less too :)

I know that the OP wanted a better "tube" sound and all good ideas here but let me throw out another:

I fight that the cabinet sims in all version of AT (3 is a bit better) are really lacking in realism... I have since always BYPASSED the amp cabinet in AT and then put an IR in my guitar signal chain... the speaker IR are really magical (the good ones) in making a guitar through AT sound like a guitar tracked in a studio...

My favorite ones are REDWIRE and they just realeased a ton of new and vintage cabinets... the AMPEG SVT is sweet as is the HiWATT with purple FANES. Of course they have the usual fair amount of Marshalls and Boogies, etc.

If you haven't already, try this and I think you will be quite satisfied.

All this talk of the Personus box is making me consider buying one second-hand. Cheers for the heads up on the little unit for a great price :D
