The Yamaha EZ-EG Guitar Midi Controller Thread

Hello, I currently own a Yamaha EZ EG and have been using it through Logic Pro with great results. I just purchased a Roland Fantom XR rack module and found that on every patch I can only produce sounds with the high E string. This is clearly because each string is its own midi channel, how come Logic seems to work fine with this issue but the rack does not?
So basically does anyone know how to solve my problem. I just want to be able to trigger the sounds in the Roland Fantom XR rack just as I would trigger them with a keyboard, but with my EZ EG instead. Any help is very much appreciated.
NOTE: I did read about the Midi Solutions box and I am not too interested in having to write programming codes, etc. Certainly there is a simpler way I am missing.

Many soft-synths only pay attention to one MIDI channel, so they treat all incoming channels the same. The Fantom may have some sort of "channel merge" more internally that you have to set to do something similar.
Otherwise, if you're routing your EZ through Logic and back out to the Fantom my the MIDI Out on your computer, then you should be able to tell Logic itself to output on only one channel. Or so I hear!

Yeah I don't think the Roland has a channel merge, I tried everything in the system midi. I would need a midi interface to route it to logic and back out...any good suggestions?

The only workaround I have found, is too go into performance mode and set channels 1-6 each to the same sound. This is a royal pain to accomplish, hopefully someone has a better solution so I can use the unit in patch mode.

set it to receive or transmit in omni mode?
Try using MIDI-OX to do whatever you want - merge, split, etc.

.... I cannot locate a help file that tells me how to assign all the "strings" to one MIDI channel...
I am playing casio mg510 that transmits on 6 different channels (though I can change it), never saw a problem in that at least with all instruments in FL studio. That's an old rule for a synth to listen on all channels by default, as I recently have read. I even played this via EZAG as MIDI module, EZAG does listen to program change command. For live playing I need a portable MIDI + audio module, any to recommend?

hey i got an ez eg about a month ago or more.
i ordered one of those cheap generic usb/midi cables off of ebay and for some reason it's not showing up in any of my software. the ebay listing said it was plug and play, and i even found yamaha drivers for midi-usb cable but that didn't work for this cable.
I went into device management and i found it. It's listed as USB Audio Device and after i look into it, it says that it's a midi device. I know a while back my midi keyboard wouldn't work and there was a problem with it showing up as a usb audio device but i can't remember what i did to make it work.
Can anyone here help me? im lost.

No matter if it's named an Audio device or not, does it show up as a MIDI device/port in your host?

I bought a cheap generic cable off ebay too. It also didn't work. Then i realised that the labels on the end were the wrong way around, so rather than being in to out and out to in I had to go in to in and out to out. Then it worked!!! You may want to try the same.

I also sold my EZ-AG a month ago due to too many false trigger, some notes not sounding at all and many notes not activating note off (notes just ran and ran).
I am looking into buying a You Rock Guitar now ($200) to see if that works better.

nope. the description of the device says midi device, but i can try reason/fruity loops and it won't find it in either. tried on 2 computers.Markleford wrote:No matter if it's named an Audio device or not, does it show up as a MIDI device/port in your host?
might just buy a midi cable and run it into my midi keyboard and that into my pc.

Sorry Maruuk, I'm a Mac guy, so I only know of MIDIPipe and that one app you've already tried on PC. How's the neck in comparison to the YRG? Just as flimsy? Or is it sturdier?Maruuk wrote:Anybody identify a simple midi-pipe-style app for PCs that can re-channelize and basically midi filter the EZ some? Without that, it's a brick.

The neck is just flimsy plastic on both. The big difference is in buttons vs. frets. Buttons are still way weird to me. And the YRG is getting more playable as they improve their firmware and control panel. Though still has a way to go.
If I could Midi-Ox my way into getting the EZ to play external like it plays internal, I'd go that way though. I can get quite good results including hammer-ons and offs with the EZ on internal tones. That falls apart going external with no filtering however.
