I didn't read through the whole thread, so this may have already been suggested to the op..If so the sorry...
Anyways, I have found with almost all sims, that when I am trying to go for a distorted sound..not crazy distorted, but sort of like a Judas priest/Scorpions type distortion level, If I high pass to get rid of the "fart" frequencies before I go into the sim..The distortion will be a little tighter...Just start at about 80hz and go up from there...
It depends though on what type of distortion you're looking for..If you are going for super heavy, then the lower end does not usually matter once the tube code is saturated...
