When I hit play I almost jumped out of my seat, I actually thought there were some weird sounds going on somewhere in my house. I'm using headphones by the way.

How do you get that really distant, almost real effect as if some airy sounds are going on 50 feet away from you? if that's just reverb, what are the reverb parameters for that do you think? is there a spacial / stereo trick for that too?

thanks!

Try Waves S1 Imager on full, it puts a bit of out-of-phase sound in the opposite speaker.

If that's not weird enough for you then you could get SoundHack and try some binaural processing. There are some cracking examples somewhere, including someone shaking some matches you can probably find on the net. Freaky in headphones.

Many reverb VST have their presets broken down into groups such as rooms/plates/halls/ambience and so on. The reverb effect in your example is sound in a (small)room. You can get this effect to varying degrees by adjusting the dry and wet mix control. It's that simple.

I would guess it's just 2 electret condenser mics arranged as if they were one's ears somewhere near the center of a small bright, reflective room....hit record. :D

I would imagine you can get the same effect with the right stereo impulse response.
EDIT: I think the 'barber shop' works so well is mostly because there are mirrors going across a long wall..not to mention the sound is always behind the head for some reason.

When I first moved into the place I live,my brain couldn't figure out where sounds in and outside the room were coming from because I had never lived in a room as big as this. My brain had to learn the reflections. It was really weird for awhile.
Sounds upstairs sounded like they were just behind my back...and so on.

Cats in a new room never explored will walk around and meow because they are searching for threats like another cat hiding behind something. Their brains hear the reflections of their meows and they somehow decide whether it's correct with the environment or there is something not right.

Usually 2 mics in a modelled human head, IIRC.

Pif's Binauralizer will get you some of the way.

Soundspectral's 3d motion gives a more pronounced effect, but it's a bit warbly and lo-fi.

Bear in mind though, this binaural stuff only works reliably on headphones.

//Edit: Just checked out the binaural barber shop thing. The plastic bag bit had me all geared up for a sudden and humorous turn to the macabre. Unbelievable.

Cool Edit/Audition "Doppler Shifter" can do this kind of things ;)

The dummy head makes sense, but I really doubt anything else is necessary.
EDIT: There may be a processor of some sort in this. I can hear something turning on just before Luigi opens the door. Maybe an aural-exciter of some sort.
One that's for sure, they are using some fine ass mics!

I think the plugin suggestions (certainly the ones I was making) were in case any interested users don't happen to have a modelled human head complete with moulded ears lying around.

On the other hand, if you're short of a fake human head but do have 5000 quid to spare, Neumann have one in fine Modernist style to sell you.

Ha...quoted myself.
I'll bet besides the great sounding mics and the dummy head, they used this;

EDIT: I can definitely hear 'comb phasing' . WTF

Thanks for the link Meffy.
I figured there were binaural radio shows somewhere.
I'm listening to one now, and strangely enough,it doesn't have what the 'Barbershop' example has. It's not even close. Odd.
It's the Neumann KU-81 binaural system. Should sound great but it's not the same.
