Sounds like fun! Are we to make up a theme for a non-existent movie, or can we write a new theme for an existing movie? I imagine someone will ask about covers of existing movie themes, too, at some point.

does "movie theme" mean the music that introduces a movie during the opening credits? or could it also mean a passage that accompanies a scene in a movie?

I believe the "Movie Theme" is meant to be a theme/melody repeated many times with different arrangements throughout the entire soundtrack.
Is that correct ?

Either or is fine. We do allow for covers in this contest.

Well, I would imagine an epoch entry in this months contest would have a brief overture, the introduction of different themes, climatic focal point, and then a satisfying ending, But you could focus on the overture, or any other section.

would it be okay to do BOTH of these:

1. submit a link to the audio mp3 file.

2. submit a link to a video with the mp3 file as soundtrack.

if #2 is okay, can we use a clip from a commercial movie? for example: replace the music in the opening titles from a james bond movie with our contest entry. would that be covered by "fair use?"

Very interesting topic this month though not entirely sure what separates a movie theme from others apart from being instrumental only, but will load a video track and see what happens.. Think I'll go with the deep and inspirational "The Hottie and the Nottie"

Yup. It downloads the print view of the submissions page and divides the text in sections with the horizontal rules as dividers. The first text in the even sections is the posters name, the odd section following that is scanned for links containing ".mp3" or ".ogg", or "kara-moon" since those downloads are attachment-based and don't show filename extensions.

Instrumental only? Do you mean your entry or movie themes in general?

To me, this is just a free-for-all with the "rule" that one should explain the context of the track. Almost anything can and has been used as movie theme music. To me it comes down to whether the track works for the specified context.

And I can't help thinking about Tom Lehrer's offering for the film version of Oedipus Rex right about now ("One thing on which you can depend is, he sure knew who a boy's best friend is.").
