IK Multimedia iRig- how good is it really? Non-guitar stuff? Input quality?

I just got an iPod a couple of weeks ago, and I'm thinking of getting an iRig to go along with it. But not just for guitar work, I also have a powered condenser pencil mic that I would like to plug into the iPod.

So how well will it work for that? Is the quality good? Does the input on the actual iPhone/iPod lower the quality level at all?

I ask because if the iPod's input itself becomes a weak link, you can get inputs at places like Radio Shack that do about the same thing. I'm sure they aren't as high quality as the iRig, but I'm curious as to what special qualities the iRig has that make it worth buying.

Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

The iRig is optimised for guitar input: high impedance instrument level.
Your pencil mic is probably lower impedance and lower level, which specs are closer to the standard mic input provided by the iPod.

Well, I will be using a guitar with it as well. I just wanted to know how well it would work otherwise, or if I should invest in another input solution. I'm torn as to exactly what to do, as $40 is a lot for a small accessory at the moment.

Impedance matching with the circuitry is what you'll get over any standard lead that simply patches an input into the input jack on the device. You can, however, also run line level input into it.

It gets good enough signal yet you are correct in that there is some degradation based on the input jack of any iDevice. We've done some things at the app level to also reduce the inherent noise and potential crosstalk on top of how the iRig accessory itself combats these.

Potentially better quality will cost more (see the Sonoma dock connector interface at $199 for an example of price point, though I don't know of the quality of that particular unit - I speak only to the dock connector itself allowing for more possibilities).

Here's someone who thought it good enough to get input into their DAW with this as the final result: http://bit.ly/steeleirig
