I guessed B.D. would be in there somewhere. I wasn't expecting G.L. :hihi:

He's a bit of a shock even when you are expecting him. :scared:

To avoid unnecessary googling: all links are purely musical; you don't need to know a thing about their sex lives, drug habits and/or attitudes to model trains (though knowing their politics might help with one row). There is a common theme to all the links.

I think I've got one answer, and the link, but I'm struggling with the rest...

Of the original photos: I really feel like I ought to know the top right one, but it looks very similar to the middle right one, which I do know. Also, does one of them have the initials E.H.?

Of the additional photos: I want one of them to have the initials L.S., but I think I'm wrong. Or am I?

Feel free to ignore my questions and leave me to my misery...

I know most of the candidates, but have no clue as of who they're supposed to link

Didn't mean it to be quite this tricky. The top row's probably the hardest - you might want to figure out the theme before tackling that one. Middle row's got three famous faces, but think about their early years.

Top right's easily the most difficult to identify. You'd know his name and his songs more than his face (or indeed more than his voice). He died (perhaps) not long after middle right was born, but in many ways they were kindred spirits. The link between top left and top middle should offer a big clue as to top right's identity.
Also, does one of them have the initials E.H.?
Not as far as I know. (You were thinking Emmylou Harris for bottom right? Think more British.)
Of the additional photos: I want one of them to have the initials L.S., but I think I'm wrong. Or am I?
You are! Or are you? (Yes, you are.) :)

I'll post all their initials tomorrow if people are still struggling with identities.

Yes and no; I actually thought she might be bottom left, but I wasn't convinced!

[Edit] How could I not recognise the late, great, bottom right!

I'm fumbling towards an answer, in a haven't-quite-got-all-the-bits "Cluedo" kind of a way. I may well post my barely-educated guesses tomorrow, unless someone else gets there first...

well, it won't be me but I'll be fascinated to know the answer. :)

I'll be fascinated to know Frank's answer too, as I suspect it's far more subtle and complicated than the one I had in mind. You may be angry at how simple the intended answer is.

I'm heading out of town tomorrow, so I'll be posting increasingly obvious clues to make sure someone gets it.

So long Dolly, Madge, Gottfried and Marianne. Thanks for playing.

If people are still stuck on identities:

BB doubts the validity of wishing on space hardware.
DB is sitting in a tin can.
GW is an orphan girl.
JH is eating posthumous airborne dessert.
WG will take you riding in his car, car.
KM is an old slut on junk.

JC has a burning ring.
EP has left the building.
MJ resents your presence on his cloud.
FW is behaving.
BD is giving notice to Maggie and her immediate family.
PO is little known these days, outside of a small circle of friends.
JB knows that memories bring crystallised carbon and iron oxide.
PR just keeps rolling along.

Post

In retrospect, guessing all the identities probably would have been enough of a puzzle by itself. First person to name them all gets... a brief moment of satisfaction?

1. Billy Bragg sang "I Dreamed I Saw Phil Ochs Last Night"
2. Phil Ochs sang "Joe Hill"
3. David Bowie sang "Song for Bob Dylan"
4. Bob Dylan sang "Song to Woody" and "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie"
5. Gillian Welch sang "Elvis Presley Blues"
6. Kirsty MacColl sang "There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis"

Bonus answers: Paul Robeson and Joan Baez both sang "Joe Hill" (but not the Phil Ochs song, the Earl Robinson and Alfred Hayes one).

The other photos: Mick Jagger, Fats Waller, Johnny Cash, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Marianne Faithfull, Gottfried Leibniz

If all is correct, I'll have a new question in somewhere around 15 hours (maybe a bit more). If anyone's got something ready to go (or comes up with something in the meantime), feel free to take my turn.

Sounds like the perfect answer to me!

I got the Bowie line straight away. It took me a while to find out that it was a photo of Gillian Welch, and I still wasn't certain about the Elvis connection (because "he's a liar and I'm not sure about you!"). I was ready to go for Paul Robeson as the connector in the first line, but wasn't convinced (and if D.H. is right, I was right not to be).

So, and :phew:, if it's not too premature? ( :phew: because I had no time to set another question anyway  )
