but all in all, compared to a few other free hosts, I find SoundCloud fairly clear and easy to use
volume slider is top right, little speaker icon just above the search bar.

not as far as i know, of course you have to have had some activity.

are you following anyone, is anyone following you, have you made any comments or favourited any tunes, has anyone done so on your tunes ?

if there's no action the dash won't show anything.

if you are the v'ger on soundcloud, i've now started to follow you and added a comment to kalachakra. you should now be able to see those things in your dash if you have the settings right.

if it's not you there'll be a v'ger thinking my "welcome to soundcloud" comment is a little over friendly ;-p

if you decide to follow me (or others) you can set your dash to show you things like other tunes they've favourited, tunes they've uploaded, comments they've made etc. i find it's an excellent way of finding new music as the people you follow likely have taste you agree with.

as i said before, this is soundcloud's power, it's a smaller group of people than some others sure, but can be far more selective and therefore useful in my opinion. i don't wan't or need a 1000 people following me ala myspace with no real interest in my tunes. i'd rather have 50 people who like my music, and in turn i only follow pepople i find interesting. it's less of a stupid popularity contest than most social media and more a decent tool for finding good music.

don't know what's going on with the forum thing, i've always been able to post just logged into my soundcloud account.

cheers,

steve.

It's the right V'ger and thx for the comment, a message of it appeared on the dashboard. :) About the dash, I was thinking I could have my tracks and the whole lot there as you said it was totally configurable, but I see only stuff from others can go there..

Volume slider: So that's where it was hiding. But I think again it proves my point how illogical things are placed at the site. Simple thing like that and people can't find it. Bet some have gone for months or maybe years without realizing.. :hihi: Everyone expects the volume to be near the tracks as with all other players which is a common sense thing, but SC moved it for I bet to make things 'easier and clearer' lol.

Forums: The support forums need you to sign up (and then log in and out), which they of course don't tell you until you've written up the question with key words and the lot.. I'll take your word the other forums don't need a separate account elsewhere, but honestly those are lacking as well. No search? Really unheard of today.

You might be right with SC vs Myspace etc, just a shame SC comes across as a noob site where things are kept to a simpleton level, which of course makes things incomprehensible. This, and lack of features makes it hard to love and take seriously imo.

But if you haven't had enough of my griping and still willing to assist, my whole point of checking out SC (and my question to support) was to see if we could use it for the KVR One-Synth-Challenge competitions where ppl could upload their songs to a common folder and anybody download or play from there. I've managed to make a group (despite no option of it in the 'group' menu  or any real explanation what it is supposed to do) and upload to it as a non-user, but songs wont show up anywhere except to the owner of the group. (who bizarrely is listed to have joined that group, when in fact is the owner/creator)

the group stuff is soundcloud groups, you can join and publish to specific groups. if everyone was a soundcloud member you could create a kvr-comp group that they could join and publish to, in this case, it won't really work.

i guess it's just taste eventually. i've had an account at nearly every music/audio site out there. some of them were ok, some of them were awful, soundcloud definately works most like i want it to. obviously ymmv.

i'll have a think about the kvr osc thing, see if i can help at all.

steve.

Thanks but don't put much into it as we already have a working system with 4shared. It's a hassle with all the waits and failed downloads etc, but it works.

SC was just suggested as an alternative, but I can't see how, although I sometimes see remix competitions like from Ohmforce using SC: http://blog.ohmforce.com/remix-cohmpetition-2010/

Well didn't give up on this and think I've found a working solution for my case by using the group player embedded on the web page.

So uploads can be done to the group dropbox even by people without account, and will automatically appear there. The player even has download buttons. Quite nifty really.

Took some time to sort out as the interface is tricky and no real help system or manual available, but found some useful blog entries with Google.

Cheers :)
