I was listening to Zimmer's score for Inception -- specifically and I'm wondering what classical pieces at the beginning of the century (or even earlier) are orchestrated similarly? I know that Zimmer mixes synths in, but you can kind of "ballpark" this type of sound (I can only think of Holst's Mars when it comes to powerful brass at the moment).

wagner had a hand in developing the bigger, louder, ballsier brass, the sort of 'metal' brass and massive forces, lot of it comes from Wagner.

As much as the classical composers I think a lot of the influence on modern film composers comes from other former composers for movies. comes to mind. , , , , , and are some others.

Edgar Varese did some pretty creative, out of the box composing that I used to listen to a long time ago. Thanks for the reminder - hadn't thought of his music in forever.
