Yesterday the new softsynth Tactile Sounds Substance was officially announced at KVR:

http://www.kvraudio.com/news/14814.html

http://www.kvraudio.com/get/4564.html

The plugin was already released one week ago at the website of Tactile Sounds:

http://tactilesounds.blogspot.com/p/ts-substance.html

the old KVR thread about TS Substance is here:

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... sc&start=0

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The plugin is Donationware and could be downloaded at the Tactile Sounds website (download links below the audio demos):

http://tactilesounds.blogspot.com/p/ts-substance.html

Since the factory bank does not contain all of the patches i made for Substance (96 in total) there is another download for my full bank at the link above. The zip files also contains the factory bank as an fxb file and an init bank for making you own sounds.

A comment from the website about donations:
"If you enjoy using Substance, please consider making a contribution in some form - money, music, and patches would all be received with gratitude."

A button for giving a donation could be found at the upper right side of the website. Opposing to other companies the plugin has no nag screen or other limitations which would remind about a donation.

BTW this is a Synthedit plugin if that's a thing you would worry about...
:) At least this means it will not run on OSX.

Have fun with the plugin :),

Ingo

PS:
BTW i'm NOT the dev of the plugin, that's Jonathan from Tactile Sounds....

Well, I didn't want to start the replies with some (constructive) criticism. So I was waiting for some other replies before posting mine. But here goes...

I played around with it and with the available presets. It is a fairly good sounding synth with pretty decent features. However, the penalty in CPU-load that has to be payed for this quality is to big tmo. Same goes for example for TAL Noisemaker in this regard.

I do applaud the aim to make a very good sounding instrument, but tmo these days the 'hunt for analog sound' is moving beyond the sense of pure and simple usability. It might sound great, but when I can only run two instance before I max out my CPU (together with some FX) then I might as well go back to hardware and have the 'ultimate' sound quality. The big advantage with softsynths (for me) is the ability to use many instances at once, something that hardware can not do apart from recording it to an audio track where you loose the ability to tweak it.

So because of that I pass on this one (and others like TAL's). The slightly better sound then say Voyager or Oatmeal (if that is really the case btw) doesn't make up for the CPU-hit that comes with it.

But if you have a big meaty dual-core machine with loads of CPU-power to spare then by all means go for it ;)

I got an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU and that's already 3 years old !!! Today you get Quad Core CPUs for really few money. IMHO with todays modern sofsynths a single core CPU will just not do it anymore, sorry. at least not with multiple instances.
Having said this i made a demo song (cover version, so copyright problems...) with around 12 instances of Substance without any problems, means less than 50% of my Quad Core CPU. A bit more when i used additional external FX.

Ah sorry, meant to say 'quad-core' instead of dual.

Well, there you have it: you already load a quad-core to 50% with ONLY 12 instances. That is seriously too much load. It means that if you want to do some real work like layering two or three instances for a complex sound you won't get far on even a quad-core.

I made this comment in another discussion before: in relation to the CPU-load of one instance of Substance I can run 10 to 15 instances of Synth1: imagine the sound capabilities of ten layered Synth1 instances. For me that's what competes ;)

But not to sound too negative; I do like Substance for what it delivers. It has much better functionality then Noisemaker for example. So I'm fairly positive about it but I won't be using it for the aforementioned reason ;)

Great news! I had to reinstall Windows and will reinstall Substance once I am all settled. :)

I didn't want to sound negative but today the first things people seem to talk about in new synths seem to be price, CPU use and factory presets.
To me sound quality, features, GUI and stability are more important things to talk about, the others mentioned above are secondary IMO.
Another thing about features: For me it's important what the synth was built for not what people maybe wish it could do. I'll not ask at an analog synth emulation why it doesn't contain wavetables or sample import.

BTW IMO where Substance excels is delivering really warm and/or fat analog sounds. Many other softsynths still fail in this category. Same about some "bread & butter" sounds in the factory sounds. IMO most of the sounds i and others made for Substance are really USABLE which i could for example not say about the presets of TAL Noizemaker and many other softsynths.

Just my 2 cents... :)

Just to say that it is a very nice synth...

I'm glad that you like it. I still like it very much even if some time is passed after i made the patches for it. :)

BTW i thought the next post on this thread will take ages. Thanks for that. :)

I didn't have time to play with it much but what i like most about it is the GUI/layout. It's very clear and simple. That's what really stands out for me. Am i the only one? :? OF course it's nice to look at too. It has some nice sounds in the presets. It's in my VST folder and I'll probably use it in the future for those reasons.
What ever!
