Cherry, shrikant: That's quite the back story. This music is very charming, and fits the back story. I really like the Casio-type sounds in the 2nd half.
Thanks for listening and giving your opinion

shrikant :D

Yeah, didn't read the comments? Aquarius is the song from Hair musical and movie.
Thanks so much for the review, I'm happy you enjoyed it!

No worries, thanks for whatever you did - I don't think it worked, had the same problem at your website, but I'd bet it's the browser (Camino). I was able to download the link and listen to it locally, not sure why I didn't try that earlier.

Updated my reviews post, should have everyone in there. No clue on how I'll vote, too many good tracks

Post

Thanks for your time xh3rv!

Post

BTW how many are the mp3s to download? My folder shows 33

Post

liqih, i probably didn't read the notes regarding your piece. The piece itself was really good though.

It looks like there was a late entry from 1-2-Many, to bring the total to 35.

1-2-Many's piece is definitely worth the late download. Check it out.

Post

Funny, I was listening to that mp3 right now, <grin>

anyway I must say that it's impossible to be fair and choose the top 10!

ps Thanks again blitzer

I voted tomorrow(Brasil) and I hope I won't be the last horse again because It would be a great injustice. :?

Don't count on that, they just taught me that "fantastic!"
is not even enough for HMs, <wink>.... Hi blitzer, <grin>

Post

Hi liqih

firefox dl them all must have missed your entry.
Downloading them fridaynight when i will also vote

Post

lol.. liqih... i couldn't decide on the 10 best... i didn't even know whether to list any HMs, because it would leave yet other entries out... and they were all really good...

ay yai yai

so, what to do?

i've got an idea... liqih, maybe just keep entering the contest every month... and some month maybe i can pan your entry a bit in a review, but give the same piece a top vote... grins

'moving right along,' i really enjoy listening to all of the songs every month, but don't like voting... but as a plug-in maven, wanting to be prize-eligible... it becomes necessary to vote.

sometimes, the prizes are declined by one or more of the top entrants, and filter down a bit, so from time to time, a 4th or 5th place showing gets a chance for a prize. so, all someone has to do is make 4th or 5th place, and they might get a prize.

then, there was the time the last-place entries got the prizes... i was right there, baby!... but it wouldn't have happened without the voting.

anyway, your piece there liqih... all top-10 lists and joking aside...
it really is fantastic.

Post

That's ok sir blitzer, just kidding with mvrasseli,
....you're right about the plugins prices, and I make my own so I don't need them, <grin>

Anyway the best parts for me are discovering the entries and reading the reviews,

pizza, ciao and cheers

This month is (yet another) one that reminds me of how different my mind works than...pretty much everyone else's.

I look at the themes as:"Okay. I am a client. I am contracting something from a musician, in this case a theme for my movie. If it is not what I want, it is fail."

My reviews reflect this.

...to me, a movie theme contains at least one well stated melodic idea or motif that when heard, instantly recalls the film in the viewers mind. Star Wars. Jaws. Lawrence of Arabia. James Bond~ these films have themes that are indelibly linked to their I.P.s.

In the case of Bond, the theme is usually presented as a pop song that then winds through the soundtrack in instrumental permutations alongside the original "Bond Theme"~that's what my entry went for.

The faults that many of the others here suffer(IMHO)from seem to be fairly similar~no clear motif. Poorly stated motif. No clear beginning or ending, or even structure. (An appalling amount just kind of run out of steam and cease).

There is also a tendency towards things that sound like iterations of the Night Rider theme and pieces that sound almost ambient or like background music~but not identifiable themes as such.

There's a funny scene in the movie:"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" in which the protagonist, a guy who works scoring a TV Crime Drama show, gets a compliment about the music on the show, to which he replies:

"It's not music.

There's no melody,
it's just tones.

Just dark, ominous tones."

...there's a lot of that going on in this contest.

That said, here are my reviews. (For any of you interested in burning me in effigy, my used clothing would make for FAR greater accuracy on your effigies, and can be had for a very reasonable price. P.M. me for details.)
_________________________________________________________________________

D.H. Miltz~Movie theme- Weird Production, odd conceptual take. Not really a movie theme, but a song about movie themes...or something. Sounds like Townes Van Zandt with 90% of the awesomeness removed recorded by a microphone 20 feet away.

Liqh~Aquarius Ghostbusters-Cover mashup...I don't really hear the Aquarius theme presented so well. Confusingly '80's sounding, which seems to be a common thread in many of this month's entries.

Sepheritoh~Melody for the Moon- As with so many of these, I wish the main melodic theme was more clearly presented, but at least it has a good one.

Daniel Pompougnac~Devant-Very pretty. Sounds more like background music, though, and I wasn't able to pick out a clear melodic theme...

BeanPole~sci Fi-Another '80's/early '90's one. I'm not sure the hoover was the best choice for the melody. Sounds more like an '80's British TV theme...or something.

Jerru~Kill me gently-Drums sound stiff and don't swing with the guitars...around 1:20, they sound like they were recorded in seperate rooms with no monitoring between them. A rethink on the rhythym programming would help a lot.As usual, would have liked the melodic theme better stated, though the "chuggy" riff was well stated.

DAX~Don't be afraid- I AM afraid. This doesn't really sound like a theme...just a weird song...

Echo Voodoo~chipping in- The hook/melodic theme needs to be better stated. It doesn't help that it is the furthest back element of the mix. Sounds like background music.

Future Bit~Light of a distant star-Another '80's/'90s sounding one. Having trouble finding the melodic theme. Sounds like background music or the backing track to an '80's Depeche Mode B-side.

Interferon~Lux-Echoy and distant. Can't really find the melodic hook...more background music?

Mike 77~Summer on oak Street-More traditional. The strings confuse me because they sound so "synthy" whereas everything else about this is more organic. Hard to find the melodic theme...it's well stated towards the end, could have used that more.

Keyman Sam~A winter night-Man, I wish I could play piano. This gets into some nice tonal territory. Again, I wish the main melodic idea were clearer and better stated. It seems to drift into other melodic ideas before the main idea settles in...:(

Lady J~the Origin- For some reason this made me think SOMEBODY's listening to Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy and DOKKEN. Music sounds out of sync once guitars come in. A quicker attack on the strings would help there...

Laguna Rising~Escape the chaser-Melodic hooks are there, but aren't presented clearly by the selection of "voices" for them~the electro flute and guitar, neither of which sound confident or present.

Messerschmidt~The City-Sounds like something from a 1970's Jim Nabors Christmas Variety show, only with echo-y '80's production. Not sure it works as a theme. I try to picture a credit sequence playing under this, and my head hurts.

1-2 Many~Skin Job-'80's again. Cooks along nicely. The lead synth was ALARMING. I will thank you to never use that sound again.

SID Wat~smoking- Holy shit. What the hell is WRONG with you???? Sounds like John Bonham falling down Buddy Rich's stairs.

SleekMonth~Fool's gold-Mix sounds a little unfinished, like you were racing to get it in before "real" life took over and you missed the deadline. Sounds like a mid-'60's Bond theme as sung by Anthony Newley. Nice. Extra points for using:"The biggest cock" in the lyric.

mrvasseli~journey- Interesting. Never feels like it really coalesces, but I could hear this in a movie...with better a better orchestral soundset. (motherf**ker!)

Nystul~Sand Storm- Creeps up on you. Good melodic theme, and stick with it. Wish is would have gotten huge and epic at the end (sound-wise, not just volume). I could hear it with a giant orchestra and tympanis and those cymbals where they whack two together.

offthewall~back to the island-The theme is there, on the penny whistle-thingy, and well stated...I'm just not sure if it's enough...like it could have used some more melodic phrases to complete the idea that the doo-dee-doot-doo-dee-dee-dee-doo thing starts. Oh, and what's up with that ending?

Thomekk~what- Comes from nowhere, goes nowhere, has a weird rhythmic thing along the way, stops abruptly. I liked the sound of it...

Patrick9~Nephalim- For some reason the strings remind me of "On and On" by the Michael Schenker group.Anyone else? No? Just me? Can't find the melodic hook. Sounds like background music.

rachmiel~long title- I don't get it. It's hardly music, much less a "theme". More like an exercise in sound effect design.

Rifftrax~steppin- '80's. Sounds like the backing track from a lesser know Rick Astley track or something. Not sure about it being a "theme". The change to piano is abrupt and Odd. I thought another track had started 'till the dancy stuff started again.

shirkant~cherry- Dude, it's mastering compressor time. You don't gotta crush your track, but I couldn't tell this was even playing after the other tracks. An odd little tune with an interesting soundset.

spaceblind~triddy-Strange and ethereal. Again, I don't hear it as a theme...more like background ambience.

xh3rv~BAM- More '80's. Sounds like the "soundtrack" patch on a D-50, then left the room. No clear melodic theme.

Lex Strooder~Avatar- I am the one person on earth who hasn't seen Avatar. This sounds nice, though. Where are the vocals from?

nikp2000~august dogs-I was born in August...wanna make something of it??? Sounds like the True Blood theme without vocals and balls...nice to hear somebody doing something that doesn't sound like '80's techno, though. This is the ONE track that could probably use MORE echo/verb.

Oddbod~the girl from canvey island- Just about perfect. Charming and delightful. Have you picked out your prize yet, bastard? :D

Phleeep~Bond remix- There is a house in New Orleans...they call James Bond? Sounds good, but a bit pedestrian...simply because "Bond remix" is basically a genre now. I would have liked to hear it break out of the box at some point. Good though. Probably getting a vote.

PsyT~becoming-Echo-y and weird. Sounds more like background music, couldn't find a clear melodic theme.

Emeraldtablet~wisdom-Very nice. Not a theme per se. I could hear it more as ending credit music. The cymbals kind of drive me insane and take me out of being immersed in the piece.

Sleek Month, thanks for the reviews, and I totally agree about having a well defined theme, and I took extra effort to make sure my entry had a theme, and that the theme was clearly heard in the strings. But yes my strings are very synthy, as time did not permit a remake with better strings. So I hope the composition is considered over the production.
