ok so after reading various posts regarding EQ's etc, about the Linear Phase business, i've sort of lost my way.

When an EQ boosts or Cuts, it changes the phase as its a temporal issue correct ? Some linear phase EQ's can help limit the damage done by that, but at the cost of introducing a latency and possible higher CPU cost.

So they would be better off on the master then agreed ? Or did I miss the point ?

SO, for track EQ'ing, you would want something, minimal phase, that doesn't introduce latency and with a small CPU hit.

Seeing as a lot of EQ's are used for cuts, which is my main concern, what options are there for EQ's that are suited to cutting frequencies while not messing up the sound too much.

So far I see Pro-Q , apQualizr, IIEQPro , also these are graphic EQ's which imo is nicer to work with.

Pro-Q and apQulaizr both have nice GUI's and analyzers which I like to see, are there others ? GlissEQ seems another option, is there latency with that, and CPU hit ?

My understanding if EQ's is limited at best, but I feel i'm understanding it better now from reading a lot of posts here. Am I a mile from the mark with my assumptions or am I getting closer to understanding where problems in EQ's lie ?

Big thanks to Zenpunkhippy from camel forms for helping me out. :)

No need to over think it specially with science.

LP eq doesn't mean it must be used for mastering, actually minimum-phase is probably used more as LP eq's introduce (usually-to me) an unwanted color, you probably won't hear it when "thinking"/while changing freq.s but when you listen overall sound you'll notice it if your monitoring is good.

For cutting, its very important to decide how aggressive filters you want to use rather than it should be LP or min. phase. Choose an eq that has a bunch of them or use shelve's.

there are tons of options, I'm using/experimenting with this right now: http://www.meldaproduction.com/mfreeformanalogeq/ but something like that is probably better as second eq for you.

I think eq's are best when you don't need them, but we do Smile just try capturing the best you can.

do you want your sound changed or not?

serrrrrrriously, phase during mixdown.. this is an issue??? maaaaybe if you're processing something you've already reached your headroom on.. i think if your composition is nested within a karplus-strong loop, *then* you've got phase considerations.. otherwise.. don't worry about it. really, it will be okay.

you want a linear phase eq process? use an fft process like dtblkfx and bounce it.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

Yeah I think you are both right, in terms of what actually happens when you EQ something is not going to be that damaging certainly in the mixdown process.

In the mastering area, i've practically stopped using EQ at all, and if I do, its really only for a tiny boost here or there, nothing dramatic at all.

I guess what I am after really is an EQ that is generally an all rounder.

Ppl I speak to these days seem to swear by Pro-Q, which does indeed seem a great all rounder, as does apQualizr, but I think it was cooker who mentioned a "Stressed" sound from it, which is why most of this came up in the 1st place.

I dont wanna accuse you of anything cos I really hope thats a link to the demo, but 4shared...

The offical demo is on their site.

So i'll check that.

Now you mentioned I remember commenting that, though I never read from anyone else something similar.

Thinking of it now problem might the default upsampling or maybe they made an update I wasn't aware of. Still good eq though for the price, I really wanted to like it :)

I have a bunch of eq's now but to be honest, today if I had the option I wouldn't buy so much overtime and I guess this happens to everyone. You see something new and buy it even if its not for just the sound, later something else gets released...Though I do mastering a lot so I'm probably more eq hungry than most.

I'll carry on with the demo, see if I can pick up it myself.

Seems a nice EQ for all round track stuff, zero latency which is nice, so carry on with the trials :)

What sounds so great about Pro-Q? From what I can tell it is a transparent EQ with a very nice GUI. You can get the same thing for free, can't you?

i'm pretty much sold on dmg equality...just as soon as i can scrape up the $. it's pretty flexible, and has enough bands, etc to do whatever i want. the analyzer and band solo are very nice touches, too.

You reckon ?

All I want really is an EQ with Zero Latency, steep shelf for cutting (high pass) then general EQ use, thats ideally got an analyzer in it but thats not essential.

But a steep shelf and good high pass/low pass filters is a must for me.

Been trying the new one from Melda just now. Jury is out with it atm.

For freeware I can suggest this http://www.meldaproduction.com/freevstp ... alizer.php

Not exactly everything you want but worth giving a shot, check out the harmonics option with various filter types and settings menu for mastering.

otherwise EQuality seems to be what is suitable for you.

I forgot all about that !! bloody hell ! lol

Thanks.

I've gone through a lot of "what's the best X" threads and had gathered quite a lot of plugins and my conclusion is, once you've done that, you should just use what sounds best to your ears, not what others say is best or say you "need" or what you "need" in technical theory. It's really as simple as that, at least as long as it's about mixing your own music.

A Linear Phase EQ sounds just as horribly ringy on the mid to high ends to me as most other EQs. I also dislike a lot of plugins that get the highest praise on here. If it doesn't work for my material, it's useless to me.

You're right and I know it, I am blagging my own head by searching for an EQ that probably doesn't even exist. Anyway, found one I really like now, just need to save up some pennies to get it, good tings come to those who wait :D
