In cases of more or less obvious ringing a minimum phase EQ usually tends to sound more natural than an LP EQ, since post-ringing is a phenomenon, which occurs in nature (think of a bell), while pre-ringing is something totally unnatural.
But in the low-bass-regions it's more about "energy" and "tight sound" ... there sometimes an LP EQ works better, sometimes an MP EQ.

A lot of the blabla about LP EQs is total bs ... especially, when people tell you it'd "smear" less in the highs with broadband boosts. In such applications there simply is no audible difference.

from what i understand, most eq plugs can be made to sound pretty much the same if the proper settings are applied. it largely just comes down to the features that suit you best (like the layout, and that sort of thing).

Well there you go, what a great and detailed answer. In terms of high pass filtering which is where I think i've been over "sciencing" it, i've tried to do something that probably isnt needed. I'm thinking linear cuts where as more shallow shelves still fit.

I've done this with just about every effect i've used, over analyzed it and read articles about it and drawn conclusions that are based more on supposition than fact.

Is there definitive guide to this and various other things like Compression etc, or is it always going to be case dependant ?

I actually feel quite relieved now tbh lol

My experience with LowCutting/HighPassing and linear phase EQing is, that sometimes it can actually really make a difference.
I then did a lot of tests to find "the perfect" LowCut .. different types/forms, different steepness, different phase relations (LP10 for example allows not only MP and LP, but everything between + more).

After some days I figured, that even though there are sometimes rather obvious differences, it depends on the material, which type fits best, and that there is no perfect LowCut.
Then I decided I rather stick with my minimum phase standard EQ and use the first cut, which works.

The thing is, sometimes linear phase EQing might sound a bit better ... but seriously, it's usually not that big of a deal. I personally dismissed linear phase EQing as tool for me, because every time I started to fiddle around (searching for the perfect settings) I lost too much time and so I lost interest in the project I was working on.
Most of you probably know the problem ... you are searching for the "perfect" settings and lose yourself in totally unimportant details .. and in the end your song does not get finished.

I'd even say, if you have to EQ that much in the lows, that it makes a big difference if you're using an LP or MP EQ, you're screwed anyways.
Then it's often the case, that the one way sounds not right .. the other way sounds better, but still not right.

Well, there are mixing-tutorial-DVDs and books. Dunno how much they go into detail on the technical side though. Most probably won't tell much about it, because in the end it's actually not that important.
It's rather important to have a plan while mixing .. to know the DOs and DON'Ts, etc.

Yeah exactly, it's all to the ear, I guess I was going into it really deeply in terms of low cuts, etc, due to what im trying to do at the moment, where I think what you say is very much correct, you can spend forever trying to do something and get fed up trying and lose interest in the project.

At least I demo'd quite a few, and tbh GlissEQ was the one that I personally liked the most, the others were really nice too, but that seemed the least destructive, and cuts were neat, tidy and precise.

So, basically, the waiting game begins as the pennies get saved :) I think i'll live until then, managed this far :) but something fun to look forward too.

Amazing how something as advanced as GlissEQ can do what it does, with no reported latency. :) Impressive really.

Big thank you to all who helped me out here, can chill out a bit now and get back to writing tracks. Filters gonna have to wait now though ! lol

You right. So you can grab DDMF IIEQ Pro cheep, or Rs-met EasyEq for free.
