Well, there's a slim possibility I might just have time to enter this month :o

Hmmm.
Now where on earth am I going to find a toy instrument?
It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

Well, the rules said 'child instrument'. I plan on stealing candy from my baby niece. I hope she can cry in tune.

The boys just had their kids accordian confiscated for unnecessarily loudness. It's MINE now :)

What if there are less than 10 entries? Unlikely I know, but does the rule allow for multiple reviews of the same entry by the same reviewer?

My window of opportunity is but a narrow slit - I may get just a few hours to do the track, and if lucky another hour or two to do some reviews, but these could be before all the entries are in. Therefore, if at that point there were only five entries, could I review each one twice from a slightly different perspective?

Anyway, good move to get reviews going. I used to review all the entires at length and it really made a difference to my appreciation of others' work. Curiously enough, the demise of my free time has coincided with the proliferation of 'child' instruments in our home. :)

Precision sound has a few toy freebies - http://www.store.precisionsound.net/toystoystoys.php

There are other free "toy samples" out there, just can't remember them atm

Some toy keyboards here:

And free and nonfree versions of a Baby Piano here:

And I think this would be acceptable:

Perhaps it should be specified where the reviews are to be posted, otherwise we're bound to get a bunch in the submissions thread (unless that's where they should go, but there again that should be specified).

Also, sorry if I'm squinting too hard, but there's a real fuzzy line for me with "childs toy", maybe I'm wrongly thinking an instrument a child would own/play, rather than specifically a toy that makes noise. please clarify if these count:

Harmonica
Recorder
Ocarina
Tin Whistle
Fan Organ
Melodica
Musicbox
ukelele
Melody Harp/lap harp/Autoharp
Xylophone

As far as the posting location for the reviews, We can keep them in both places. We'll all just have to be a little keen on reading both.

Harmonica - If it one of those 4 to 5 hole jobs OK
Recorder - Sure, When I was in grade school, they mad us buy one
Ocarina - Didn't quite know what this was so I googled it. The first entry was vid of a kid playing it. If it's on the internet......, it's in
Tin Whistle - NO, the tin will cut off little kids finger. Plastic whistle is OK. One of those whistles that changes pitch as you pull on the valve would be cool to hear
Fan Organ - If you let your kid play with that, we should call social services
Music Box - This is for the female contestants only
Ukelele - Absolutely
AutoHarp - Yes!
Xylophone - No

Next!
I have a really fast computer, some good mics, vintage musical instruments, and lots of fancy software. Just need some talent

I have no child instruments, I'm afraid.
Mind if I synthesize a few?

 What were you looking at ???

To clarify on the fan organ: One Christmas (circa 1975) we kids all got a little plastic organ on a little stand that plugged into the wall and when turned on emitted a continuous blowing sound. It had chord buttons on the left and maybe a two-three octave keyboard - I learned to love the sound it made, somewhat like an accordion. Sadly, it's long been gone

This sounds a lot like it - http://www.samplesets.scorpionshops.com ... demo_1.mp3

PS - Scoops you missed the lap harp

Could this include something along the lines of an NES, or (Commodore 64) SID chip emulator?

For instance, there's a VSTI called Famisynth, and it's an NES emulator. The VSTI interface looks a lot like 'an NES.'

It's so cute!

Or, how about something emulating a 'Simon Says' toy, or whatnot?

If emulations of electronic toys are a bit of a stretch, maybe I'll just go for the Toy Piano VSTI.

Post

Not my submission - but I made an entry years ago in the monthly contest that was all kids instruments and my kids playing them. I sampled the sounds and mangled them slightly.

Result is here: How to get your kids interested in sampling

this will be another fun contest!

The last contest I started too late, and didn't have time to properly mix and master my entry- so I just reworked it. For anyone interested, my new, MUCH improved rendition of "Summer on Oak Street" can be heard here:
