3 days to go!! :-o :-o :-o :-o :-o

Post

i'm 50% though mine....but allready at a level where i will submit it no matter what.
this "synth" to program is a nightmare with tha interface....and also need u to think outside of synthesis....it's more about layering waveforms.

My osc19 project "Deja vu" available now for downloading:
http://www.4shared.com/file/PBEB64pj/os ... plton.html

Contents:
1) Reaper 3.66 project file (*.rpp)
2) IR for ReaVerb (converted from free "True M7" library)

Only Reaper (and SQ8L) needed for opening of this project.
The cat has four paws: in, out, ground and power supply )

Cheers for the submission Steplton :) ... and good luck Olikana ... I know what you mean!!!! ... I'm struggling, but I'll get there somehow.

To be honest, I still haven't figured SQ8L out, and relying on getting as close as poss with the presets before attempting tweaks. So many presets! ... and yet, so difficult to find the sounds I really want!

Thats not a fault of the synth though, more due to not having enough time to 'play with it' before it was time to get that bloody track done! :-o :-o

And speaking of synths .... in just over 4 weeks time, we will be launching OSC21 .. and I dont feel there has been enough discussion re. synth choice.

There is some convergence of ideas, but from a fairly small number of folks.

In the next few days, I am gonna have to decide whether there is enough input to change what we have in place, otherwise, for the sake of expediency, contact Madpsyance ( skipping vanmorrison ) to choose a synth!

Madpsyance has not had a go yet, so this is not a bad idea at all, but I do feel there is a desire for change, and no support for the current arrangement.

So lets hear from more folks .... ie. folks who have not yet commented :)

Sporting to share the project file Steplton, thx. I know some people requested this. Even before the deadline as well..

I'd say it's about time we take a trip to Poland in order to visit some absolutely wonderful synths! :)
Do I even have to mention any names? :hihi:

yeh use old method for osc21...then in sq8l when askin to vote for entries also ask to vote for a synth to be used in osc22?

it's a ONE synth challenge...which one of those synths do u reccomend using?
although i have personally nothin against doing a Synth "Pack" challenge.

Renoise Host
6 instances of SQ8L

Track FX:
Buzmaxi3
1 Elysia Filter on drum track

Master FX:
Mverb
Elysia Filter
Modern Equalizer
Classic Mastering Limiter

I found SQ8L to sound great, and to have some good, built-in drum presets. But the interface is a bit tough to understand, and using the Renoise automation device to automate various parameters of SQ8L is a non-starter (Renoise automation device basically indicates there are no 'automatable' parameters).

Also, I couldn't find the 'FX section' of SQ8L, so employed Mverb for the reverb.

So, loved the sounds; fairly well loathed the interface. Part of me wondered if SQ8L is a good fascimile of a 25-year-old hardware synth interface. In the end, I definitely made a mental note that SQ8L is something to re-examine in the future; even with automation parameters apparently unavailable.

That is because there ARE no automatable parameters ;)

That is because there isn't one :D (and still it sounds wonderful on it's own).

If you ever owned an ESQ-1 or an SQ80 then you love the fact that it works EXACTLY like the hardware. It has one difference: on the hardware there where no rotary encoders around the display but buttons to assign the ONE data-entry fader to that particular parameter to edit it. If the real Ensoniqs would have had that feature it would have made them even more killer-synths then they already where :D
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

Yeah, i saw the lack of automation and wondered if it were my problem, or a 'feature' of the synth itself.

I could have sworn the word 'effect' appeared somewhere in the 'menu screens,' but the trail went cold there. Then i wondered though if it were cheating to use Mverb.

It's kind of neat to hear that - at least from the interface standpoint - that it's a nearly faithful rendition of hardware. SQL8 sounds good, too.

Anyway, SQ8L definitely made its way into my list of 'take a listen to this one again' VSTIs.

About 33 hours to go!!!! ... and I aint got mine ready!!! :o

Spent a good chunk of today creating a vst ... cos I'm not finding the time to do e-albums, and I'm already one participants prize behind.

Its gonna be a 4 way freq band selective delay with knobs on!
To give you an idea, there are 4 channels.
Each channel is identical other than the freq band ranges. Signal coming into each channel is filtered. the filter has an adjustable min freq, and an adjustable bandwidth of 0 to 2 octaves above the set min... then it is delayed, and the output has pan and level controls.... and some crazy but controllable modulation on the min freq ( and therefore the band ), the delay period, and the panning. delay range is switchable, and goes from 1 ms to 10 seconds!!!

So theoretically, you can have a single delay active on the middle frequencies ... over a very narrow band if you wish, popping up somewhere to the right, whilst you set the delay and f/b on the the upper mid band to have more of a reverb whooshing to the left, neanwhile the low mid is making some strange grunting and tape wobble type racket in the centre, and the top has a phaser/flange swinging across the stereo spectrum!

In sane hands, some nice reverb fx with a feeling of an irregular space, adt, auto multi tracking, complex delays, thickening, and sweepy type sounds can be achieved ... but I like the effect on an individual track, with a gate before the beast ( I think it will be called Bandelay4 ) and a compressor after it ... with narrowed bands so particular freq dependent chunks of delay leap around.

Just a little more work to do, and it'll be ready ... warning, it'll prob look like shit!!! :) .... but if so, it'll be because I want to give it to you ( ie. OSC17 participants ) sooner rather than later, and I will revisit the GUI fairly soon after.

I have another interesting little synth almost ready for OSC18 participants ... I'll catch up some day :)
:)

Sounds very interesting Tattie. Hope the params will be syncable though?

Post

Which parameters need to be syncable V'ger? The Lfo's?

Post

All of them. I find no matter how good stuff is, if I have to do calculus to make it fit the song or riff, I'll rather open another one, lazy bugger I am.. ;)

This one called :

"Strangled by Strings".

I used :

17 x SQ8L

Track FX :

2 x Classic Delay
2 x ReaComp
1 x ReaDelay
1 x ReaXComp
1 x George Yohng W1 Limiter
1 x Omniverb.

Some trackEQ, NO automation.

Master Fx :

1 x Sonalksis FreeG
1 x CLAS
1 x VoS/Bootsie DensityMKII <- EDIT forgot this one
1 x TLs Maximizer.

I wanted the strings to come in as a wall of sound, but they drowned out all that was playing.
I don't have enough mixing knowledge to get what I wanted, so I did what I could (for days :-o )
to get close, and what you hear now is what it became. (No wall at all :( ).

Enjoy.
