The 3 main sounds found on Records are

Fender
Marshall
Dual Rectifier

Something a Matchless is just a variation of Fender or older Marshalls. I dont think the masses need that with all thats available already.

Its just not on enough records to justify.
As it stands now, you can just about every clean sound found on popular records.

Some sounds you cannot get on AMP3

The crystal clear sound and gain punch of a Hiwatt

The boutique distortions of Bogner and Deizel

The brown sound of a modded Marshall.

The mid focused liquid sound of a Boogie Mark IV(IMO they failed with III)

So in the interest of having a complete palette of distortions(even clean amps are using distortion)..these 4 areas would put virtually no current guitar sound out of reach. And if you think about it--thats the key...you dont want customers saying they cant get so and so sound from your modeler.

The Matchless DC was actually based on upon Vox's AC30 but without any frills with other tweaks here and there, the Chieftan was variations on the british themes. Them two amplifiers are on more records than you may think, they are studio legends! Nearly every amplifier in existence owes a huge debt to the original 7ender Bassman anyway

As for yet more amp models/emulations - I myself am really not arsed. I have the real things already so i will continue to stick with them for the future unless something really special happens. Heck my lowly Vox ValveTronix AD30VT, AD100VT and ToneLabSE can nail much of the above very convincingly.
Want a brown sound? Get yourself a Whampler Pedals Pinnacle II box and put it infront of a slightly crunchy marshall

The brown sound of a modded Marshall.
First of all the "Brown Sound" refers specifically to Eddie Van Halen's sound during the David Lee Roth years. Eddie's Marshall Plexi was not actually modded in any way, except for the 100W Sylvania 6CA7 power tubes he used. 6CA7s are also known as EL34s. So AmpliTube is capable of doing the same 'mod'. The power sag he got from the VariAC unit he plugged his amp into seems to have had less effect on his sound that the sag of his strings which were detuned a half step, and sometimes all the way down to C# on the E string.

Second of all, I've uploaded two "Brown Sound" presets to the AT3 user preset exchange that I made, closely following Eddie's actual rig, and based on the ratings and number of downloads, I'd say people think I was pretty successful.

So this is proof that AT3 can do the Brown Sound pretty well already.

Post

Yep, guess that proves it.

Have you downloaded the presets?

i thought a brown sound made you turd your pants, at3 made me wet myself with excitement, but theres no ik bum damage as yet (not quite the same as wallet damage me thinks)

Post

No, that's the "brown note."
This is the Brown Sound.

There's a lot of mythology built up around Eddie's tone, particularly the VariAC and the dummy load. But these were just to allow him to fully saturate his Plexi without blowing up his vintage cabs (or his ears).

AT3 has no such problem, so you can recreate the exact same tube saturation through the same vintage cabs without the need for lowering the power saturation threshold or cutting the volume to the speakers.

I'd venture a guess that if presented with the same exact hardware gear and recording console, etc, and AmpliTube 3 that most here in this thread would likely come up with a reasonable facsimile of the "brown sound" through AmpliTube 3 far more quickly and effectively than with the actual gear. Sometimes taking out some of the pesky variables and complexity might be more a help than hindrance...

EVH apparently wasn't really happy with that famous "brown sound" anyways. And while people are STILL trying to get that tone, he's had more amps, guitars, fx that you can probably name.....yet......for some reason he always sounds about the same. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

btw, I like van halen II for the best EVH tone personally :D

Not on 'Beat It'. Eddie just showed up with his guitar and his Echoplex.
He used the amp provided by Quincy Jones, and not surprisingly, his famous tone is MIA.

It really is a bitch. A mere 2 instances can easily crash a project.
+1, I'm demoing Waves GTR3 and Vandal atm specifically because having both Omnisphere and Amplitube in a project is just becoming unusable.

Omnisphere's RAM usage is worth it, Amplitube not so much. They seem more concerned with making crappy iphone apps and devaluing their products with 3 for 1 offers/obscene licence transfer fees than sorting out user issues.
Man, I feel your pain. This is an old game that many of us have been playing since Windows 95 came out. I was recording guitar "parts" in CWPA4 with 16mbs of ram.

I didn't know about the ram issue with AT3, but your referencing Omnisphere got my attention because I bought them both right after I went 64bit.

I waited a full year to upgrade to Omnisphere (nearly killed me) even though I'd had much exposure to it on a 32bit system and I'm certainly not disagreeing with your assertion that it's worth the hassle that entails.

But I saw first hand that I wasn't up for that level of care anymore - even though it was fully usable with that setup.

Now to AT3. It's the only ampsim I use, and I think I'm in a minority there, but if they can come up with a way to separate whatever trade-offs Peter refers to that may reduce ram usage...

Spectrasonics did in an update, but for an ampsim that would be like a huge banner saying "our competition is better in 32 bit".

Spectrasonics didn't have any reason to worry about that. IK does. AT3 is in it's infancy and I'm sure they're looking into the ram issue, but it does seem like a colossal waste of time.

The 64 bit change has been written on the wall for about 4 years and developers of new products who are now sweating a 100mb less ram usage are chasing their own tail.

If someone owns AT3 is looking into buying GTR3 or GR4, or Vandal because they're running (and being terribly careful with) Omnisphere on a 32 bit system, I don't think it's practical for any company to deal with it.

It sucks, but it's the truth.

No way should an algorithim based plug be demanding more RAM than sample libraries. Its just wrong 32bit or not.
Intel Core2 Quad CPU + 4 GIG RAM
