PSYCLE is a cool program, despite its faults

I've been keeping an eye on the Psycledelics this past month (whenever I could be online, LOL) and hoping soon I could run PSYCLE on my 64-bit laptop. I really hope the devs could make all their goals.

Yesterday I downloaded the latest edition of OpenMPT but somehow it feels clunky, especially that General screen (View menu) I never liked. I know, I know, I was spoiled too much by RENOISE...

Lately OpenMPT seems to have copied the "parameter control" from PSYCLE and Aodix...

Anyway, I like PSYCLE's modular approach better. Some of the generators like Arguru Synth and Pooplog FM sound really cool, and some wild things could be done with effect commands. That's despite the fact I use VST plug-ins a lot with this program. I would like the devs to fix a few things about it: default to saving a single VST preset rather than a whole bank, and add a menu command to name the VST preset.

The Sampler is OK, but it could use an arpeggio command at least. Please don't make us use Sampulse just for that!!! ;)

Some of us using PSYCLE might still have to deal with the lack of volume column and pains to record automation from more than one parameter at a time, on a single track. It's fun using FabFilter Micro with that filter frequency-peak joystick, but if you want to record all the tweaks in PSYCLE with high accuracy, you'd have to use 16 lines per beat or something like that... ugh!

I started this topic because PSYCLE doesn't seem to get mentioned at all around here. I know they have their own forum, but I'm not joining. I'm supposed to choose RENOISE over all the other trackers, but I don't like using just one program. Freedom of choice and freeware are great!!!

Hey, good to mention Psycle.
Seems like Buzz is usually the main Renoise alternative mentioned around here.

Psycle is a really solid program. For a piece of freeware that started its life nearly a decade ago, it's extremely stable (SynthEdit support used to give it problems but it works fantastic now) and has incredible sound quality. Best of all, it runs without a hitch on POS laptop :D

It's true that the parameter tweaking isn't the best (I wish that each track had expandable 'effects' columns instead of wasting entire tracks on each tweak). But it's still being updated regularly and has some great developers behind it. I actually just posted a feature request on the Psycle boards and the lead dev responded within a few hours that he'd incorporate it. Woot!

I've been using Psycle now and then since I think c. 2003, and this program just gets better and better. Just've installed the latest version on a recently acquired netbook -- works like a beauty. An ideal choice for someone on a budget or just not wanting to spend ;)

So has anyone checked out PSYCLE x64 yet? I downloaded it today. Now if only they could fix that Wave Editor. :tu:

EDIT: I thought it had a desynchronization problem with rendered waves when the tempo is not 125... LOL, it must be the off-by-1 rule. Using "FED8" in the effect column might do a pattern delay for 9 lines, not 8. I did another song at 142BPM and was getting ready to timestretch the rendered wave in REAPER but it wasn't necessary. Sorry if I misled anyone. ;)

Dang, it doesn't preserve the keystroke shortcut definitions everytime the program is started. They need to fix that, I'm becoming irritated.

The latest update to TAL-NoiseMaker2 causes an exception in PSYCLE x64 whenever a preset is saved or loaded.

A preset is successfully saved, then the dialog comes up, saying PSYCLE had to bypass the machine to prevent the latter from crashing the host. Loading that preset which was previously saved is counterproductive.

One solution is to use Plogue Bidule as VST plug-in within PSYCLE, and use TAL-NoiseMaker2 within Bidule.
