Clue 1: Bottom left is a big fan of the Yamaha PSS series these days, but only the older ones.

Clue 2: Bottom right. Tomorrow it'll be 14 years, but this goes back further; right back to the very start. Shocking, isn't it?

Never let it be said I'm not a generous man...here's some more of them:

Big hint: they're all singles, from around the same period, with one connection; more cryptic clues later, if needed.

All clues relate to the original picture, to avoid confusion.
Clue 3: Top left. Time flies when your singer's having surgery.
Clue 4: Bottom left (again). Mr. Ramsay has an IQ of between 51 and 70.
Clue 5: Top right. Gearbox happiness separation.

Bottom left is Jilted John then I guess from your clue - I didn't ever have the picture cover for that so I don't think I've ever seen it.
Top right is Transmission by Joy Division - but I think that's one of the re-release covers rather than the original (might be wrong though).
Bottom right is Electricity by OMD.
Don't know the other one, but from those 3 my guess is they're all produced by Martin Hannett?

Yes, robojam got the correct link, so...

11 O'Clock Tick Tock - U2
(Reference to Bono's recent spinal surgery)

Transmission - Joy Division
(Or "Gearbox - Happiness Separation")
although I think I picked the more well-known one. I had to be more specific with the OMD one, as the later version wasn't produced by Hannett...

Jilted John - Jilted John
(AKA John Shuttleworth, PSS lover, and "Gordon is a moron")

Electricity - OMD (Factory version)
(OMD's new album out today - first in 14 years. Also: "Shocking, isn't it!"
)
The cover was apparently black writing on a black background, so this was the best photo I could find.
Back to you robojam!
[Edit] It was Steve McGarry
http://www.linkedin.com/pub/steve-mcgarry/4/822/b50
From the above link: "Concluded I was probably doing something wrong when Peter Saville was creating iconic sleeves for Factory while I was designing legendary Manc drag artist Foo Foo Lamarr's "My Life At The Palace" album sleeve."

I'm pretty sure Saville didn't design the Jilted John one; if he did he should be ashamed of himself!Doug1978 wrote:The link is peter saville, sleeve designer.

Uncles?
Grateful Dead: "Uncle John's Band" (Workingman's Dead)
Brian Eno: "Third Uncle" (Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy))
Terrance and Phillip: "Uncle Fucka" (South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut)
Which would make Replicas the odd one out.

Well done Frank - very quick! Just to complete it, gary numan's uncle played drums for the tubeway army but there is no song about him.Blank_Frank wrote:Uncles? Yeah, that was the reason. The others sang about uncles but Gary Numan didn't even though he had his uncle in the band.Doug1978 wrote:Well done Frank - very quick! Frank had 90% of it so I guess it's his again.
