I think the original poster might have a point. When I play pianissimo in stand alone mode it has more sparkle/brilliance than when I run it in vst mode in FL Studio. Not a huge problem. But it is noticable.

Ten bucks on it's the levels are different and that's the difference you hear.

Twenty bucks he is just stoned and/or have changed his physical position relative to the speaker and/or the humidity of the room have changed and/or his attention fluctuates and pick up different aspects of the same stimulation and that this is causing the difference he hears.

In theory, we should hear differences all the time. The question is actually how the brain manage to convince us that we hear the same.
