I think to have an 'ANY synth challenge' once a year is a good idea. But instead of a normal OSC and not in parallel as we saw that didn't work well with NA2SC1..

Sure, not entirely fair for those who can't afford the top synths, but as pointed out, some are suffering with last generation PCs so there is already a certain gap between the haves/have nots even on normal freeware OSCs.

But in fairness, synths like Z3ta was being sold for $20, and now String Studio VS-1 for the same price which should be within reach for most.

Bottom line is to see what can really be made with people's fav synths and have fun with it. I would like it for the selfish reason that I bought some new synths and want to spend time working with one of them on an OSC which seems about the only thing that can make me finish anything. I remember getting Alchemy, Zebra and Predator about the same time but actually spending time with the C64 instead which was kinda funny.. :hihi:

Hi guys, back from doing gigs, caught up with sleep, and great to come back to some real discussion!! :)

Olikana, I have to admit my last comment was a little impatient and snappy, but as most folks know, I have been struggling to keep these comps running for some time now, and keeping things to agreed plans is vital if I am to carry on.
... also, with all the stuff thats eating up my time (life!) at the moment, the adrenaline rush of running from one deadline to another is exciting, but also features moments of "holy f*ck! what the f*ck now???" ... unfortunately Olikana, you were in the wrong place at the wrong time and were all to convenient for me to offload upon ... and so I apologise to you. ... but hey, cool discussion :) ... maybe I should offload more often :hihi:

I do appreciate that you were offering what may have been a solution, just didn't think the situation at that point was as much a problem as to put it ahead of agreed procedure.

I am actually not down on this comp at all ... it just doesn't appeal to me personally, and for me, not what OSC is all about ... very much for the reasons Yeager has given.

So anyway, that wealth of discussion has been refreshing ... lets nail this issue.

Unless there is massive objection I will run the any-one-synth-challenge in place of a regular OSC. It will have one week more than the usual time frame ... we all need a break eh? ... voting.
Launch will be 29th November. closing date for submissions will be 29th December. Voting will go on til 23rd January ... so thats 4 weeks and 3 days for submissions (... however, now you know its gonna happen, you have about 3 months really! ) ... and 3 weeks and 4 days to vote.

Olikana, now it's time for us to use our debating skills in a more constructive fashion. This is very much your comp idea, so I'm not about to edit out any of your vision for it.
So I want you to write the rules, the submission procedure and the voting procedure. With the latter, it would be a good idea to think about how different numbers of entries may require different methods of casting votes.

If you want to PM me your detailed suggestions, I will be happy to read over and flag up any probs we may run into, and perhaps offer suggestions ... but you will have the final say. We have two months to get it right, but get it right we must! ... it is always a bad deal to change rules after the launch.

As for OSC21, I have had no word from HiEnergy or Satyatunes. Unless this situation changes by midnight tomorrow, we will go with Gravejester's suggestion, 'Chimera' .... and I think that will be a CHALLENGE!! :)

... OK, I need to vote!!! Apologies in advance, I doubt very much if I will have time to do decent reviews. I do have time to write a half arsed attempt, but I believe that would be time wasted.

Catch you soon ;) Fred.

Tattie, It's too much time for voting, n'est-ce pas?
One week would be sufficient  ... OK, two weeks :D
Otherwise, when results appear, we any more don't remember works of challenge

OK, I found the time to write some comments ... so here we go.

Halfwastedlove .. Great bass! the guts of a cool track there, nice pump to it. Just a bit short to really get stuck in, but the sounds are good ... where it ends though, there is a promise of something about to happen.

BWWd .. Love the bass, kick and snare! Simple but infectious composition, with a nicely timed breaks to vary. Nice sounds and good spacey production ... great mix!

Strangled by strings ... that clunky chunky funky bass is a winner on its own! Love the arrangement .. develops well and changes in direction are always an invitation rather than a diversion. That whistle is very convincing, and the strings, rather than strangling, are so rich they are almost nourishing! Usual Yeager top quality, but this time, maybe a wee bit long overall. Production and composition excellent.

Belyrus ... Fkn mad stuff once again from Mr B. Again theres a story here ... not sure what the story is, but we start off in an ambulance ( which is never a comfortable prospect ) then we are psychoanalised in that 'let me take you back to your child hood' sort of way ... then as we imagine running up and down the school starcase we are attacked by wingy things that normally gnaw wood but suddenly have a taste for meat. But we get out, and frantically look right left, and everywhere ... only to realise we have coins in our pockets, but we've missed the ice cream van!

Look Ma, No Ensoniques ... Superb kit! Convincing bass, great elec piano, and a very well constructed funky track worthy of playing alongside anything I can think of from that genre/era. Good quality sounds, but any points gained in such a strong field are gonna be for the work put into mixing up those rhythms. good work!

The Future Is Digital... Amazing amount of space in this track considering how strong and meaty all the sounds are. Incredible Dynamics, but most important, every single individual sound is quality ... and an impressive range of them as well.

Deja Vu... yes deja vu indeed ... very much of a time, and yet spans time from 70s sitcom themes, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Chas n' Dave, and video game tunes..... to get all that in one track ... with one synth??? ... wow! Sounds are great, composition great, mix great, production great .... nuf said?

Mary's Prayer ... Interesting opening vibe. Some good playing and nice melodies here, but some sounds lacking in some ways. I think it is more down to the mix and EQ than the sounds created. Feels like it needs to be opened out at the top as well as the bottom end. However, looking at the title, perhaps that middly, reverby, churchy feel was the intention.

Respiration ... this appeals to me in much the same way as I enjoy Mr B's tracks ... therefore, I tell hear it as a story and find it easier to describe what the sounds represent rather than describe the sounds themselves. The work horn sounds, everyone leaves and the sound of their clogs on the metal bridge can be heard. Back in the workplace, the electrics are being tampered with and reconfigured and the boss transforms into something groaning and hideous with gas coming out of every orifice. On demand, a procession of slaves bring him cups of tea and deliver insincere compliments ... nice unusual sounds, and very interesting experiential track! (.. that knocking sound is bloody creepy! )

Running .... this track is perhaps too good. So authentic and well crafted in its genre. A good range of sounds, and all the sounds are spot on quality wise, the mix/production is rich and professional sounding ... a damned good job all round! But maybe so well rounded and well finished that nothing jumped out and demanded I put some more thought into it. Gonna have to think hard about this, cos it is a solid track, but in such a very, very strong field, with everything from quality to queer, it doesn't have a 'trick' which leaps out and sets it apart.

And so after 2 listens tonight, bringing the amount of listens to each track to 5 ( except for Mr B and New Kids on the Block's tracks ... which have I've listened to more cos they're my faves ... despite this not reflected in the vote ) and I say ....

Future 7
Deja Vu 5
Strangled 4
BWWd 3
Look Ma 3
Respiration 2

My synth suggestion for OSC 22 is 'Pink'

I dont mind saying again that this is an stunning collection of tracks, and the variation in sounds has more than matched the quality despite the number of entries being average.
I dont know if anyone has noticed, but I need to comment on the number of plays registered for the tracks .... Something really cool is happening here ... phenomenal number of plays compared to past comps ... I suspect we have V'ger to congratulate ... I reckon the site has made a real difference to our profile, and this is reflected in the prize offeres that appear to be trickling in :)

Anyway, I'll go put my votes onto the site ... about 8 hours to go!!! :-o

OK done! :) ... looks like mulperi is gonna take some catching :)

Yeager wrote:I think the problem with the AnyOSC is... What are we judging ?

The song? production? the playing? the chosen synth? the quality of whatever?
u will find that 4 out of 5 criterias u mentioned apply to the regular featured OSC anyway. :hihi:
but i'd simply narow it down to just one thing :what sounds better to you.

the bottomline is still about the Challenge (and not really competition) to make an entire track using just one synth (although this time of own choice) for all the sounds, and showcasing the potential of a chosen synth.

regular OSCS make for better competitions betwen members .that i agree (equal playing fields etc).
the anyOSC is more a chance to hear the different synths out there in action....a "battle of the synths" ...although members ability in using them will still be the decisive factor in bringing the best out of the synths.

to avoid it being just boring collection of demo tunes though i think it will be important to have a good THEME .
that i'll discuss with tattie over the next month...but if anyone has a cool idea for a theme PM me.
