After having said that you just needed to try some synonyms in Google searches, I was worried that I might have made it too easy by giving the actual synonym. But it looks like I'll have to come up with some more clues.
The song is from 1969 (the same year as his big hit), but that probably won't help. (Actually, Wikipedia says that even his big hit was only a very minor hit in the United States. So he may in fact be virtually unheard of outside the UK. I hadn't realised that before.)
