I would love to see formant capabilities somehow added. Not in the way of Angelina, but more aggressive or digital and that use the step sequencer to modulate.

actually, i can see a distinct design space for rainbow. the goal might be to be the complimentary opposite of rhino -- focus on elegant simplicity; things that rhino (by design) is a bit clumsy at.
it is true that there are a ton of VA synths on the market now; however, there are not many well-designed ones. what i mean by that is, huge sonic pallet, dead simple to program, easy to apply to a mix. rhino can never fit this bill, because it is too complex. Complexity is a good thing, but is not the only thing.
The best example i can think of is synth 1. Look at its popularity. It is popular not only because its free (many less popular synths are also free). It is not popular because of its ultra sound quality (it has quality issues). Yet, everybody and his brother writes patches for it. I belive this is because of its architecture -- small, simple, yet inspiring.
I am thinking of a design where everything is always in view, the controls are primarily knobs and radio buttons, and that any new "inventions" are in GUI elegance -- aimed at making it easier to program and to use.
