Hello people,

This is Schumann's "Of foreign lands and ppl" from his Kinderszenen.

There's a melody, constant triplet arpeggios, and the bass.

Please take a look at bar 5 and 6.

The G2 note is tied.

And I'm wondering why Schumann would've done that?

Because it's the same note? No, there are many other places where a note is repeated in the next beat but not tied.

Thanks for helping me. :help:

I'm not sure whether you're asking about the concept or the artistic merit of the tie, so I'll answer both.
The tie on that G note means that once you play it, you hold it for the remainder of bar 5 and also for the first 8th of bar 6. Essentially, you treat the two tied notes as a single dotted quarter note (quarter+eigth duration).

As to why Schumann did it...well, I suppose it sounded nice to him
Maybe it was because if the tie wasn't there, the first chord in bar 6 would be a fifth, which might not have sounded so great in the context of the piece...ok I'm talking out of my ass but you get the idea :D

I get it! Thanks! :)

If you percieve the left hand as 3 voices tieing the G makes the repetiton a little less obvious due to the rythmic variation. At the same time emphasizing the countermovement in the outer voices.
