Here's one for the iphone/pad wielding jazz-heads..
The latest update for the ireal book just out has a function like 'band in a box' so it produces drum/bass/piano accompaniment with the included 1000 or so jazz song charts.
A pretty cool practice tool in your pocket, you can mix the individual instrument levels, change tempo, transpose and also enter your own songs/changes.
Sounds pretty reasonable too, an add on pack with 10 extra styles is about $8

Have to dust off my jazz chops!

I'm not sure that I'm waiting for a BaiB on the iPad.

Anyway, I'm using iRealBook to input my own charts. I hope to play a gig in two weeks with just an iPad on my music stand.

Probably not the most exciting thing, but i had been thinking of brushing up my jazz stuff (studied it at college 14 years ago for a couple of years, but let it slip a bit) so it might be fun for that.
have fun on that gig!

I think that's a grand idea, thanks for the heads up - updating now :)

I've used iRealBook on several gigs - very handy! I can live without the playalong functionality, but whatever.

Does this app show chord shapes or would I need to know the chords?

It shows "A7 Dm7" et cetera.

Thanks. Not sure how useful it would be foe me with my limited jazz chord knowledge.

Actually I just had a quick search and the symbols are no big deal. Just substitutions for maj and m etc. Although some are a bit confusing like Cø7. I thought that would be Cm7b5 so how can it be Cm7b57?

C half-diminished 7th - this has audio example: http://www.tonalityguide.com/xxhdim7.php

Edit - a less classical/traditional music take on it, yet not uber-jazzy either. They also have one on straightahead ol' diminished 7th too: http://www.ehow.com/video_2388916_play- ... chord.html

Edit again, and yes the iRealBook app is excellent. Have it on iPhone and iPad and at very least it reminds me how much of my jazz chops I've lost since school :)

Thanks for that. I ended up just getting the iReal Book and even though I struggle with some of the chords it is a great learning tool and will force me to expand my understanding of chords. A little popup image of the chords would be a great little addition for me but I suppose a lot of users are above the need for that.

This is currently my favorite app.

I've been using iReal Book AND the included player for several "jazz standards" gigs recently.

In the past, I've been getting booked to come in with my computer rig, where I've sequenced up hundreds of songs via MIDI, Reaper, Reason, SSD, etc., but all the guitars and vocals are handled by me.

My usual song list in these situations is very eclectic, everything from Sinatra to Sabbath, but I always gravitate toward what the patrons want to hear most.

Well, people have been consistently loving the standards, so most recently, I've been getting bookings to do just those jazz standards. In fact, I have another 8 nights coming up in January.

My first experiment when I discovered the iReal Book app and player, was to take my iPad to the gig one evening and let the iReal Book player handle the backing on a few songs, instead of my hand-sequenced MIDI on the computer. If it went poorly at ALL, I could simply go back to my computer sequenced material.

It didn't go poorly. iReal Book's player actually sounded quite good in a live setting. So much so that the regular patrons never noticed the difference, and a couple of the tech-savvy ones were shocked to find out later that some of the "jazz trio" backing was coming from my iPad.

Since that first experiment, I've done full gigs with JUST the iReal Book app as my "backing band", leaving the computer rig at home.

Now I've gone so minimal that I'm using an old iPod Touch loaded with AmpKit+ as my gigging guitar rig.

So, a mic-w-stand, my guitar, an iPad, an iPod Touch, a little Mackie mixer, and I have everything I need to do "full band" jazz gigs.

Of course, that's assuming house PA. Otherwise, I bring whatever level of sound reinforcement is needed for the venue.

But not having to lug around my computer system OR a guitar amp for these gigs has been amazing. It's all very Star Trek. lol
