Hi all,

I've been trying to find a good oscilloscope. Preferably freeware, but I'd be willing to pay a few bucks for one that meets all my requirements.

By "good" I mean not buggy, like s(m)exoscope unfortunately is (I just spent a few days chasing a "bug" that was actually bad draws from s(m)exoscope.)

Requirements:

1. I need to be able to set it to one sample per pixel, so I can see every sample, exactly, without any interpolation from the scope itself. Other rate zoom levels are nice, but 1:1 is what I really need.

2. Ideally it would draw a line from the zero line, vertically to the sample level for each sample and NOT attempt to "connect the dots" with a line draw (which creates artificial interpolation that isn't actually in the signal). This would display as a solid filled waveform.

3. It needs to sync to the waveform in classic rising/falling modes.

4. A freeze button is pretty much a necessity.

5. Bigger is better, resizeable or even full-screen capability would be awesome.

I may just have to write one myself, but wanted to check and see if I'm reinventing the wheel. I've rejected s(m)exoscope and ProgOsc (Oszillos Mega Scope), as well as Reaper's built-in "JS:Analysis/gfxscope". Know of any others?

Just found one made with SynthMaker that isn't too bad. OpenScope...

http://www.synthschool.com/downloads.html

While it "connects the dots" with lines, it draws dots where the real samples are at any zoom level, which is showing me exactly what I need to see.

It's a bit jumpy on its sync, but it does have a freeze function as well so that'll do for now. Wish it was bigger too, but oh well.

I'm still interested if anyone knows of any others.

EDIT: Oops, spoke too soon. It seems to cause problems with the host (Reaper). Other plug-in GUIs wouldn't update, and it crashed on exit. :?

EDIT2: And now it's working OK. Hmmmm...

You might want to try RS-MET Oscillo

(This is the oscilloscope view)

Don't forget to play the "h" button to stretch the view horizontally.

Also

SmartElectronix s(M)exoscope
"Vintage" plug :P

Professional technicians are assessed by the abilities they possess.
Amateur technicians are assessed by the tools they possess - and the amount of those tools, with an obvious preference to the latest hyped ones.

I tried it just now and had a very long load time, but it did work and now seems to be responsive again. Try it again.

Thanks, but I already said in my original post that s(M)exoscope isn't doing for me.

Same with the rs-met one, it draws antialiased lines which, while very pretty, don't show me where the real samples fall. (It has a fairly nice spectrum analyzer though which I might use, so thanks anyway!)

That's not bad, though it doesn't make very good use of the space. For example, I need to be zoomed in to about 5 pixels per sample before it will mark the individual samples, as I require. A classic example of form interfering with function. It might be possible to dial it in somehow, but one pixel of movement on the zoom slider creates too much of a jump at high zoom levels. (Some of the better developers scale their knobs or sliders on a curve to provide more detail at the low ends. :hihi: )

I do like the ability to slide back in time a third of a second though.

Nice spectrum analyzer.

Have you tried s(M)exoscope? Always works for me.

BTW, your first link doesn't work.

Yep, rejected smegoscope :hihi: in my original post.

And I think the synthschool people need to go to webschool. ;) Keep trying the link, their server seems to be up and down today.

I'm not sure if this has the requirements you demand as I haven't downloaded and tested this plugin myself but I just found *This* topic in the effects section of the forum.

Yep, I searched before starting this thread. Rejected in my OP for reasons explained above.

Ha! I've been in the same boat lately.

Blue Cat Audio's "Oscilloscope Multi" seems to be the best one I can find, and I like it -- but, of course, comparing its output to all of the others on this list had left me wondering "WTF???!??" with some of the differences.

Give it a whirl, too, and please let us know what you think!

(I have to justify spending $49 on a freakin' oscilloscope, with so many wonderful synths on the market, including yours. :D)
