Is 2C's Aether REALLY worth it? (the answer is: yes, certainly)

Another nice free bonus:

We just added mouse-scroll-wheel behavior as a few people requested a day or two ago. I guess that is good turn-around time? :!:

It does the following:

1) On the Browser page it scrolls the preset columns left and right. (remember also the keyboard arrow keys can be used to change preset selection in the broswer.) These things plus the new folder selection behavior make auditioning presets INCREDIBLY fast!

2) Mouse-scroll-wheel can be used to change knob values. Shift-key + mouse-scroll-wheel can fine tune the values. This is quite nice too!

Enjoy. :D

(only OSX ATM... a day or two and we will add it to Win also...)

Yeah - 32 bit apps won't like that folder on 64 bit Windows.
Well the Windows "App Data" folder would be a nice choice, since it basically is the same as OSX "Application Support" AFAIK... but MS seems to think it was a good idea to make this folder hidden, so we'd rather not use a hidden folder.

We have no reports of any issues of using /Program Folders/2C-Audio/Aether/ for "core files" on 64bit OSs, even when using 32bit hosts. What is important is that the 32bit VST shell and the 64bit VST shell and the RTAS shell are installed in the correct locations for user's specific host setups.

Grrrreat. Though we're quite a few that have requested it since version 1. Better late than never. ;-) Major thanks!

How should the CPU usage of 1.5.1 compare to 1.5.0?

I just installed 1.5.1 and one instance is taking up about 25% on the vst performance meter... I don't recall it being quite that hungry. This is with a 5 second preset, on Cubase 5.5.1, WinXP, a 2.4g Intel quad, with the buffer set at 512.

I tried it on ProTools, but PT just locked up...however my Protools setup has never been right...I never got the PT CPU overload issues worked out, however, I used to be able to run a few instances of Aether in my ProTools setup.

Is there some new default setting that's set for higher CPU use?

btw - I noticed that the new .DLL is far smaller than the old one. How'd that happen?

Code optimization?

Can I install V1.5.1 directly over a fresh v1.0.0 version on my new PC ?

(or do I have to install all the mid updates)

If anyone has the answer thanks in advance :)

It should be possible yes.

Just manually backup any User Presets first to be safe, if you have any.
Thanks for the answer :)

I'll try that

It should be identical.

Maybe you are using L-R Stereo mode for LRs, and comparing to L-R Mono mode previously?

There are no known issues with PT. If you can provide more details maybe we can help you troubleshoot, but if there are other issues with your PT system, then likely this is not an Aether problem.

The .dll you see in your plugin folders is just a shell/pointer to the resources in /Program Files/2C-Audio/Aether/

Hi Andrew,

I just reloaded 1.5.0 to compare it with 1.5.1. The CPU usage is identical between the versions for both VST and RTAS on my system.

Sorry for my misperception.

3. Manual
========================================================

The Aether PDF manual is extensive and offers many insights into getting the most out of Aether. It is regularly updated with new information to reflect changes in Aether updates, and to add information that we discover is useful to users based on feedback we receive from them. The most up-to-date version of the manual is available here:

http://www.2caudio.com/products/aether/ ... Manual.pdf

A link to this location is included in the Documentation folder included with this installer.

We recommend you check this location regularly for updated information.
Hey Andrew, have you guys given any thought to doing a "live" wiki manual like Camel Audio does for Alchemy? pdfs seems so 1998. It would also be less work for you in doing updates.

Just a thought.

...I actually asked about that earlier in this thread and the consensus seemed to be that everyone preferred PDF. It might be easy enough to do both, but I can't promise anything. I will look into it...

I prefer PDF. It's "where-ever-bringable" and usually, from what I have noticed, turn up way more beautiful than web pages. To me it feels more like having a real paper manual. :). I've also uploaded the PDFs of all my music-plugins and apps to my Google Docs-account and sync it with my Android phone so it's always with me where ever I am.

Besides, the web is so 1992 :P

My 2 cent.

I also prefer PDF.

I just re-downloaded Aether. after reading about the mouse wheel implementation, but the file date is the same as the original update.

Obviously I jumped the gun a bit, so my question is: will we get an email soon with an update link, or should we re-download from the same link?

My account tells me the link has expired, so I'm a bit concerned...

Hi John-E34

We did not post the win version of this yet since no one has encountered this issue yet on Win. So we are looking at one or two minor things in the Win installer process at the same time, and will upload it shortly. I will post here when it is online.
