I really applaud your sense of experimentation and I am always amazed by your level of sound design skills, J. I think this has more work involved for it to be a complete thought, but it does have a pleasant "searching for something" imagery to it. Extremely nice drum work, but I found myself wanting something a little more energetic from the drummer as the track built up. Maybe this does already, but a slow increase in tempo over the course of the song might lend it some momentum. I like the 2nd track a lot, too, but my suggestion would be to find a way to combine these 2 tracks together.
I am interested in working vocally with you again someday, so please let me know if you would like to collab on this.

It's funny you mention combining the two tracks. They were conceived at the same time and rather than trying to fit them together I just said fuckit.

Still making my mind up about this. I think JS is right though, in that some vocals would negate the repetitiveness as it sounds like a traditional song trying to push through. It was like speculative heaviness with moments of KROQ that would surface for me, like an experiment in search of a pop structure. I also agree with him re: your sound skills and experimentation. In all other things, of course, we disagree and I shall never again speak of psychology in the Geisteswissenschaften over kopi luwak with him. But on this piece we agree.

-no. In fact I worried about mentioning the 'ROQ. It was just a stand in for "traditional popular music forms." Don't worry - they'll never play you... though what a trip that would be to be grinding home at rush hour and hear something of yours.
I would just assume it's my Ipod.

2 things occur to me as I relisten.
-as you learn guitar your tone is going to grow in remarkable awesome. The sound is so already there.
-I miss experimentation and am delighted you post some. It inspires. One of the things I appreciated about Runagate, too. Just kept pressing.

how do you dial in your beeps? I assume you use a modular? There's something about beeps & bloops used percussively that I don't do well.

It's okay, I know my roots and so does Jed the Fish. I think KROQ is different than it was in the '90s when I was listening, though. You might hear something of mine if you listen to KCRW not KROQ.

I worked really hard on the guitar and bass sounds, thanks for noticing. I too always loved Runagate's wild/reckless experimentation, he continues to inspire me to constantly do weird stuff.

The bleeps are indeed modular based. Part of it is the fast envelope+lowpass gate combo and part of it is heavy compression with a slow attack. I think you might be able to get something similar from Aalto using the AD envelope and it's lopass gate and Audio Damage's Rough Rider. The granular delay on 'un' is something I built in reaktor but you can get similar results from nay granular pitch shifter.

I have always had a tough time with melody, you know that by now. I'm still struggling with the whole guitar thing, too. Normally I'd just sample individual notes and build a melody like that but I wanted to keep editing down to a minimum on this one, I wanted it to sound like I played it. I consider this a work in progress, I'd eventually like to add vocals of some sort.

I don't know about 'building' melody, you 'sing' a melody. With whatever instrument. I guess you have built something to sing *over*; as an object it seems that way. Good job.
