UPDATE: fixed a timbral issue in poly mode (see page 3 of thread)

PATCHES NEEDED! the presets are quick adjustments of the pling3 patch bank.

pling episode 4 - PLucked strING - and maybe just about right.

this is an "improved karplus-strong" synth
hermite interpolation (sustain of high notes is pretty good now..)
optional oversampling
damping and dispersion filtering (low and allpass) both with pitch/phase correction
orthogonal coupling
three part picking impulse shaper
8 voice polyphony

much lower cpu!
free!

*edit* - now includes manual

PLEASE - if you are a practiced hand in physical modeling, take a moment to send me some quality patches in .fxp format :)

this model features no improvements in terms of emulating specific instruments - there's no sympathetic resonance, body modeling et c. my objective is to make a vst that will put modeling in a positive light for new users. this vst may have some better eg. basses in it. i only have headphones available for monitoring so i'm hoping for contributions of perspective and experience.

as an elementary model, this vst should be configured and post processed for emulative applications, eg. multiple instances for each string.

knobs under sliders trim velocity (this is de facto in my vst) - buttons under knobs on the lower gui are inverters - either envelope output polarity or invert the way velocity is applied to envelope rate stages. these controls ARE tool-tipped :)

evil plans:

in a week or so this vst should be available fully patched and documented. a $10 donation will be solicited but unnecessary for download. if there's much enthusiasm i'd like to do a guitar emu.. which developer wouldn't?? while i was waking up i realised that plucking position should have a tracking param.. shorter string length = higher position. ah well. just intonation would be nice too.

patching tips:

using the noise lfo > fine pitch very slightly (lfo amount is exponentially scaled.. halfway is 25%) can work.. for more 'elasticy' sound (eg. teles) you could use a (phase synced > key on?) lfo amplified by a very short envelope.. i have to do things atm but wanted to get this out.

these kinds of models do respond well to 'acoustic emulative thinking' in patching in my opinion, of course it's easier for me cos i know what the bloody thing is doing.. often params can be pushed further to add colour lacking in the pristine model. fyi the noise hp is rbp biquad, the bpf is se state variable.

oh - how the coupling thingy works - the intent is to make the horizontal sustain higher (more rigid on that axis) - shut the coupling and reduce the vertical gain to the main decay body you're looking for.. then raising coupling slightly should retain that shorter decay but add a longer, quieter sustain. if you're looking for a mathy exponential sustain, use no coupling and crank the vertical gain up.

i've also noticed that the oversampling doesn't necessarily do much for it.. in some cases it defeats sustain and high freqs. it's there anyway.

and hopefully, all the controls do what they're supposed to and the mod destinations are correctly routed! forgive - i have no velocity sensitive controller atm :tantrum:

Thank you

Edit:

I love your "new" UI style.
Image I am sorry, I am not a native English speaker.

It sounds really karplus-strongesque, and that is always a pleasure. Some beautiful sounds in your demo, but the basses are very "special", they sound more "substractive". Maybe improvments can be made here.

I'm not a great patcher, but I'll try some.
You can't always get what you waaaant...

thanks for checking it out. i think there is room for improvement in the patching :) i'd love to get mokafix's ears on this..

I was listening to the sample---OMG!! The sound of it is something else again!

I'll try my so-called hand at some pre-sets----not sure how they will work but--hey---I'll try anything!! :D

Cool. Look forward to the guitar emu also.
Are you still working on the effects or did I miss their release?

Sounds real good, the gui has many, many options. So far I've mastered one, the correct pitch button. Sounds like it's tuning some element to how I play.

My monitor I'm on right now is half burnt out so colors aren't 100% accurate right now. It was free, so I'm not spending any real money on a monitor for a single core desktop.

Will have a play this afternoon (it is Melbourne cup day holiday for me) and am looking forward to losing hours in random plinging.

Demo is intriguing.

Thanks. I look forward to your new releases more than any other.

:D

http://www.xoxos.net/temp/pling4-2.mp3 a few loud, high pitches with hyperion on notespew.

patch update hopefully the initial presets are a little better now (same link above).

(edit: see post below this.. fixed)
i figured out what's wrong with the oversampling - i forgot to interpolate input samples for the 2nd sample's input :p so that's on the to-do list.

pitch correction - the phase response of lowpass filtering makes the loop longer and w/o correction, the karplus-strong drops in pitch (as heard in my and other previous releases) - sometimes it sounds neat sometimes it just sounds like the wrong pitch, but if you turn the correction off the pitch drop is there if you want it.

hammering it out :)

uploaded again.. oversampling is now correctly implemented though i probably won't use it in most cases..

the sharp peak of the pick envelope produces aliasing (pointy bit = frequencies higher than nyquist). in the unoversampled mode, these frequencies produce a nice, bright buzz that add unique resonances to each note, and due to the hermite interpolation, they sustain well :) the oversampling 'cures' most of the aliasing, so what you get is 2x the cpu with a less bright timbre

well done Sir ! :D

it sounds great & the CPU usage is really low,
I have tried making a couple of presets but I need to sleep & rest my ears to hear how I can make them sound good enough to send them to you :)

great work once again ! thank you :tu:

would you like the module?

i'd be reluctant to distribute waveguide sems for those 'enterprising chaps' who would wrap it up and slap a price tag on it. your work is a different matter.
