external midi stuck notes

I am thrilled with this software overall, but I am having one problem. If I have external midi layers programmed and I am holding a note while I change Cantabile programs, I'll end up with the notes I'm holding being stuck on.
Is there any way to program an "all notes and controllers off" command which will be sent to the midi outs at setup changes?

What exactly do you mean with "Cantabile program"? Can you describe a bit closer what you are doing?
If you are probably using subsessions and the midi routing table this might be occasionally not bullet proof.
But if you are using the rack midi settings for zone/transpose that should flawless on transitions.
I agree that using a panic button on a regular basis isn't really nice.

I meant changing subsessions. I'm changing subsessions because that that doesn't reload my piano samples. Overall, everything is working wonderfully well. I have different subsessions assigned to program change buttons on my midi keyboard. I just have to make sure that I'm not holding down any notes when I change subsessions.

Well, I think we should try to work out the issue... I myself am always alarmed when I hear about such issues or find such myself. I hate glitches and things like that...
You were also talking about "external midi layers"... what's that exactly? External HW sound modules?

I have an M-Audio ProKeys Sono 88 which I bought especially to use with Cantabile:

This is a perfect instrument to use with Cantabile because it has built in midi and audio, so my setup is basically the M-Audio keyboard, my laptop, and a single USB cable between them. I am using it with a church praise band and what I need is a piano and various pads layered with the piano. I'm using Pianissimo as my piano because it sounds almost as good as the mega VST pianos but uses a fraction of the resources:

Still, when you are playing a lot of piano notes, it can get a little heavy on the resources. The ProKeys Sono 88 has a GM synth in it which can be set up with standard GM controllers. I set up some pads using Cantabile triggers and filter rerouts for the midi channels (along with sustain pedal filter) and it works really well for the pads. It really sounds good and everything still comes out of the ProKeys outputs. The only problem is that if I hold notes and switch presets, the layered pad sounds are stuck on. The panic button only seems to turn VST instruments notes off, so I have to go back to that subsession and hit the same notes again in order to turn them off.
Aside from that, everything is perfect. I have the simplest setup I've ever had and yet it's also the best sounding one that I've ever played.

First of all thank you for this detailed description!
It looks like the problem is an external midi routing problem. That's what I assumed as this is the only thing I know can sometimes be a problem.
Maybe a final question, how do you route midi to the midi sound module in your keyboard? Via the Midi Routing Table or via racks routing back to an external midi target?
It's probably worth a try to route from a rack rather than using the routing table as this should provide the same midi handling as for plugins and is probably more stable.
Currently I have no setup to recreate a similar scenario like yours, but probably it helps trying this suggestion. Let me know your findings.
