I'm curious how much work is involved in making a dedicated iPad version of an app?

The reason i ask is it seems most devs make the universal version free, but some like ikmultimedia charge again
for the iPad version, many companies are proud to announce free universal updates.

Is this genuine or just ik being greedy as stated in every review of amplitude iPad so far?

is there any diff between the two 'versions' ?

I think NanoStudio looks perfectly acceptable. Not razorsharp, but there's nothing wrong with how it looks.

Maybe it is just a test? If it is successful then they might extend this strategy to the desktop as well:

800x600 version; $199.00
1024x768 version: $219.00
1280x800 version: $249.00
Complete resolution bundle: $399.00

This is a sticky subject, and a sore point for many. I think if the dev puts a lot of work into making the UI slick and dedicated to the iPad, then they can charge for a separate version. Charging again and for more money, for simply higher resolution graphics seems almost criminal to me.
Meh.

I have to say ikmultimedia lost me as a customer for this, I will get amp kit+ when it arrives.

Except that we're not nearly in the minority on this. When I got an iPad I noticed many apps needed to have another purchase for the separate version. If I didn't want it, I just used the 2x version of the iPhone app - problem solved.

1. It is a different application with associated costs
2. If you take a look at other top music apps, you'll find 12 of the top 50 grossing music apps are universal with most of them doing both iPhone and iPad apps (edit - a current "darling" of the music apps out there is ReBirth which is not Universal)
3. As stated above, the 2x version is ALWAYS an option because Apple sets it up that way - they must run on iPad in 2x mode.
4. The cost vs the Mac/PC version (even buying both) is minimal, and free versions are available of all of our iOS apps

I guess this isn't "Angry Birds" (which is actually an application I decided not to repurchase going between iPhone and iPad, but that's more because I didn't want to replay all the levels to get 3 stars and whatnot) but I suppose once Apple starts also providing all iPhone purchasers with free iPads too we'll have to follow the trend.

As opposed to the one that's actually a better sounding app? Or is it 100% cost decision?

Ampkit+ sounds fantastic, just go look at the user reviews at the app store.

Also it is universal so it can be used on both iPad and iPod at no extra cost unlike amplitube.

Bit of an edit here, go into the app store and check out the reviews for amplitube iPad both free and paid and you will see a whole load of negative reviews and all to do with having to pay again.

Something has to be wrong, the customers?
