Windows 7, how's it doing for you?

Had no problem whatsoever for 8 months. Then about 2 weeks ago I turn on the PC one morning and it won't launch windows. Kept getting a message to "repair". Wouldn't work. Then I'd just get a black screen with the mouse cursor over it. Had to reinstall Windows 7 (64-bit). Now I have a disc image backup. Reinstalling and reauthorizing all my plugins was a pain. Aside from this one (rather major) incident, I am very happy with Windows 7. Fl Studio extended memory version works great. All plugins installed and work well (250+).

That sounds like drive corruption, not a probelm with W7 per se. Still sucks though. Been there with XP a few times too with very similar problems.

Edit: One thing though that they deeply screwed in 7 are the games. Not only do you have to download them additionally by hand, but Solitare, Minesweeper, etc., they all suck. If you play them, prepare yourself for a disappointing and annoying experience

There is a useful help link with 'how too' topics, 'GodMode'. I haven't had any trouble turning automatic stuff off like scans, updates, tasks, powersaving etc.
I haven't gone neurotic 'streamlining', a la black viper, this system like I did with XP. Hey, RAM is cheap. Takes 1 GB to load my stuff.

Been running W7 Ultimate here for almost a year now with NO issues whatsoever.
Combined with an i7, it cranks along and handles memory hogging apps and plugins very well.

A great side thread would be to post plugins that will not work in W7 - or is there a list compiled already?

Personally, I haven't found a single one, and I use only 32-bit VST plugins (edit to clarify: under 64-bit Win 7).

So far what I've found is some of the Korg plug-ins either don't work, or are not found, and the u-he plugins like Zebra and the effects suite don't work. However, for u-he, the 64 bit versions fix all the problems.

As stated many times, I made the switch to win7 back with the RC.....never had any real issues.

Went to a completely x64 system in FEB, no issues. I love win7, I love x64, and I only have a handful of x86 only plugs (and some I know are being updated) so I'm nearly totally native

Sounds like my home network; three of the four systems on my network are Windows XP and my main machine is W7. The only problem I had was setting up Comodo Firewall to allow my wife's computer access to my printer over the network, as the version I had gotten was brand new and they had changed the interface. If I turned off the firewall, the printer sharing just 'worked'. Once I got that sorted, I've had no issues with transferring files, getting it set up with my Xbox 360 for streaming, etc. I'm all fixed IP addresses. What was your issue?

I voted for "It's been great! I've had no issues since switching (64 bit)" - which doesn't mean it's glitch-free! It means it works better than any other previous windows version. Still, slow file access, computer freezing, machine slows down after a while are still the common problems in the windows world.

How often does that happen for you? My machine is on 24/7, I rarely reboot, and I don't think my machine has frozen or BSOD's since the install. Interesting... It's possible it's faulty hardware, but it depends how many machines you see this on?

That was a piece of cake for me. It wasn't as easy as adding another XP machine, but I easily got my windows 7 machine on the network and sharing files and printers with my old XP based network. It took all of an hour at most the first time I did it. Google is your friend when setting things up for the first time. Now I can do it a lot faster.

im so disappointed. did exactly that at home with no thrills, no adventures, and everything working fine, from my networked printer to my NAS to driving the thing from my XP netbook via VNC. damn, where did i go right?
