Cheers for the votes guys :) ... we need to keep this thread bumped ... so if anyone wants to start some compelling discussion, like ... errr. if chords and/or notes correspond to tastes, then what does liquorice sound like? :)

Cheers for sharing Dwsel ... yeah, some excellent music there, looks like a great game as well! :)

Right, gonna do another listen through, and hopefully get my votes and reviews in soon .. if not tonight :)

OK, here we go .... Overview of the comp?
Very impressed with the number of entries given the probs some folks had with Chimera :)
Overall, to be honest, the range of sounds was not as wide as we find in most comps, but Chimera's character seeps through all the tracks, and where range may be limited, this has been more than made up for by a consistency which makes this collection the feel of an album, and also the imagination of the writers shines through.
I only managed 3 listens minimum for each track, and each time .... I suppose because I live in the North East of Scotland, the ice and wind blowing through these tracks had a sense of time and place :)

And so ..........

Sterile existence cracking - uiiuiiu ... From an icy gaseous intro, a strange an interesting set of sounds and rhythms get going portraying a fearless swagger by a paper-tearing, coin-tossing giant on a leisurely stroll. nice changes in rhythm.

Obstacle - edteneyck ... Nice percussive sounds, and another giant ... or two ... this time a nibbling insect of huge proportions hissing and chattering to a whale.

Echidna's daughter - Yeager ... Solid, pumping and rhythmic, well produced, good range of percussive sounds, like a 50's sci-fi revisited in the early 80s.

Brick in the Sky - Peter Gone Sonic ... Excellent snare ... well produced, interesting sounds all round with cool variation....particularly on the beats Lovely composition. Again, a bit of a sci-fi feel, this time, mixed with a kinda South American vibe.... good use of stereo space.

Recovering chimera - Cubensick ... Opens up in a large temple. great percs and a very nice evolving composition of glassy sounds and metals. lovely production.

Last Train to Chimerian - dwsel ... Interesting set of sounds from the off, a composition designed to draw the listener closer. Nice gentle soothing track. love that glassy whistling sound.

WTSHNN Intro - dwsel ... An illusion of flying across a vast landscape, that typical glassy sound of Chimera picking out features ... a bit short, nice while it lasted.

Chimers Metroid - Archon ... Again, a feeling of a huge space, some clever use of nice percussive sounds, and well produced with a carefree swing to it.

Chimerache - Xaemina ... Nice opening. A feeling of dawn breaking and a general slow waking up .... and then some assertive beats driving a heavy heart which gradually lightens and sings, good production, nice atmospheric journey.

Air - bzur ... Nice simple melody providing a sparkle to the otherwise relaxing feel, nice spacious track.

Last Days of War on Jupiter - VanMorrison ... Good range of sounds from the off, develops beautifully, sweet lead sound. Love how some of the sounds have been used sparingly to punctuate the flow. nice production.

Drusilla - mrblitz000 ... Feeling of a big space again, this time though, we're hearing it from a smaller adjacent room while peering through the keyhole or maybe listening to it on the radio .... intriguing.

Joie - new kids on the block ... Old sci-fi. The vessel has landed ... all is still ... the wait for something to emerge is actually more exciting than anything that could possibly appear, nice production, nice combination of sounds! lovely atmospheric composition. Love it!

Into the Light - Mulperi ...Vast stone clad space, distant fairground organ. Biting cold weather. Rich production, relaxing, if slightly melancholic track.

Electronic Sea Shanty - Dead Eddy ...Vast windswept landscape, something in the water - but it's staying there, amusing itself ..... casually. Great soundscape, well produced!

And the points go to ......

10 - Joie - New kids on the block
7 - Last Days of War on Jupiter - VanMorrison
5 - Echidna's daughter - Yeager
3 - Brick in the Sky - Peter Gone Sonic
2 - Electronic Sea Shanty - Dead Eddy
1 - Recovering chimera - Cubensick

... So glad to be able to give well deserved big scores to NKOTB and Vanmorrison ... not just on how these guys have improved, but absolutely on merit :) ... great work!

And my chosen synth? Well, let me tell you a story ....
More than two years ago, our local council closed down a brilliant day centre for disabled people. Despite the hurt, and the massive loss, the users have fought on and since formed a charitible organisation, and now organise their own educational and social activities, showing up our council for the shameless useless b*st*rds they are!
They put on a fundraising event at the weekend, and raised over £1500. I could not attend the event, but I bought some raffle tickets to help with their efforts .... and I won a prize! .... a photo frame, signed by none other than pop megastar Pink! .... of course, I returned the prize in order that it could be raffled again for more funds :hihi: .... and in recognition of my generosity, I urge more folks to vote for 'Pink' as a featured synth :hihi:

tattiemannie, thanks for the reviews!

if possible, i'd like to change my vote to Pink, as well. ...earlier today, was 'revisiting' it, and it's quite the synth.

Here is a wee status report ....

We have a neck and neck situation at the top between 'air' and 'Chimera Metroid' on 30 points apiece.

Not too far behind we find a close group of chasers in 'Into The Light' on 24, 'Brick In The Sky' on 22, and 'Last Days of was on Jupiter' on 21.

Some way behind those, but still in with a chance of grabbing a prize, we have 'Sterile existence cracking' and 'Joie' on 16 and 15 points respectively.

'Last train to Chimeranian' is best of the rest on 11, with 'Recovering Chimera', 'Echidna's Daughter', 'Drusilla', and 'Chimeransayat' on 9 points, closely followed by 'Obstacle' on 8, and 'Chimerache' on 7. WTSHNN Intro awaits its first point(s) as it sits there impersonating a cd with the sellophane still intact :wink: ...... but ..... anything can happen!!! ... especially if we see MORE VOTES coming in!! :help:

errr..... bump?

Alrighty, here are my votes:

10 :: Brick in the Sky (Noise Fest) - Peter Gone Sonic
I thought this was a great composition with outstanding percussion sounds. The quality of the kick actually made me jealous. =)

7 :: Recovering Chimera - Cubensick
This track has great atmosphere. It reminds me of the ice and snow. I also really like the melody.

5 :: Obstacle - edteneyck
Some really unique percussion sounds in this one. I picture an industrial park... or a "toiling" montage in a movie.

3 :: Last days of a war on Jupiter - VanMorrison
Very provocative, with some neat effects. I feel the emotion in this one.

2 :: Air - bzur
Another track that reminds me of the cold. I'm especially fond of the stereo panning, pulsing effect thing.

1 :: Echidna's Daughter - Yeager
Driving and full of character. The production sounds very full and well done.

Cheers for the votes and comments Archon 1024 .... do you have a synth nomination? :)

... Any more votes?? :shock:

Post

I actually don't have a synth nomination. I'm really just starting to explore electronic music production, and honestly I use the synths from this competition to broaden my horizons. I don't even know of any other free synths I would vote for!
