I totally agree kevvvvv, and how many similarities ...I mean, is there anybody here (older than 20) who's not had to battle with depression? I'm amazed...keep those stories coming in...

It is good to know the person behind the monitor. I feel like I understand others that participated on a better level. They are now "real" to me.

Yep, some very interesting reading indeed, guess I'll take a turn...
who am i / what have i done ...
I'm Kevin B. (for Breidenbach), single (no GF) and don't mind it one bit. Born in Wisconsin (USA) in 1978. Went to a private christian school till 8th grade, the people there were all facists & I got shunned because I wasn't from a rich family like everyone else... hence I became the anti-social religion-hater that I am now (no offense to religious folks, everyone has their set of beliefs, and I respect that, I just don't agree). When my parents couldn't afford to send me there anymore, I went to a small public school in a hick town, where I met a very few cool people, who I'm still friends with today (though I'm currently living in Mass., so I don't see them too much). I've always loved music, and when I was 15 I was introduced to industrial music, which has been my main love ever since- though I've broadened my horizons since then (I listen to little bit of almost everything electronic, and also get into classic rock like the Beatles & Pink Floyd, that would be my dad's fault mostly). Also around the time I was 15, I started trying to learn to play bass, me & a friend of mine who played guitar would go out to the garage & torture the neighbors regularly. After a while, I got distracted by drugs & alcohol, and developed quite a problem by the time I was 17. When it got to the point where my mom was afraid of me, I was forced to take a look at what I was doing, and cleaned up my act a bit (though I still partake in a bit of pot, and have a beer or three now & again). Around age 19, I got into computer-based music, and have been at it ever since. Before finding music I spent a lot of time feeling depressed & alone, now I'm actually a fairly contented guy.
As for an occupation, I was a machinist back in WI- I started at the shop I worked for when I was 17, and worked there until they picked up & moved around a year ago (luckily I was able to invest in some audio toys while I still had money). I then found myself unable to find a new job, and ended up homeless for awhile, now I'm living with my dad & his girlfriend in Mass, working part-time at a gas station until I can find something better (anybody know anyone in the MA area looking for a sound designer/entry-level studio tech?). Also helping my dad out with my half-siblings (a brother, 2- and a sister, 2 months). Pretty strange to be an only child for 22 yrs, and then have two siblings... not in a bad way, but definitely strange.
what do i do at the moment ...
Other than the cashier gig, I'm currently trying to find a niche in the sound design biz... my first sample disc is coming out from Soundengine.com in the not-too-distant future, they have the material, just waiting for artwork/mfg/etc. Once that's out there, I plan to shop my stuff around & see what happens.
what is my goal in life ...
I'd like to get into doing sound design for video games (and a sample cd every so often), or maybe win the lottery so I can just sit in my studio & do whatever I want, when I want to do it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> My ultimate dream would be to be sent out to space, alone, with a decent DAW & various audio toys, and just cruise around. It'd be nice to have some contact (email) with folks back on earth, but that's completely optional.
i am interested in ...
Synthesis/audio mangling, music, reading, SF/fantasy, studying various religions & occultism, animals/nature, computers, video games, technology (& esp. robotics).

I grew up in a shelter home for drug addicts run by my mom and dad

One thing it was good for ... looking back at the time I was in the house act rufneck I have been to all discothèques in Europe you can possibly think of ... hey poweruser,
i shall react in english since everyone else does
nope, paard op hol , isnt a place i visit regularly...actually my partying days are sort of fading away (getting old?) im getting boring and sitting at home in the weekends, + my gf lives in england so i'm saving all my cash for regular visits.....
places i do sometimes visit are: the bazart and the musicon, small places where new and local band try n impress the small crowds, i like that cause u hear some original sounds there at times...

pro .... is .... a ... subjective term <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />
depends on what people define as pro
one can make absolutely pro stuff but still don't make any bucks of it
or one can make absolute shit and perform on a daily basis
you don't need pro gear to make a professional song either
I heard marvellous tunes made with some freeware tools
I heard complete shit build up with so called pro equipment
during the Dutch gabber house period the guy I was mc-ing with performed with 1 Roland 909 and 1 Roland 303 and 1 Roland juno
we ones made a crowd go insane with just the bass drum and some vocal stuff of me
in 1994 we were in the foreprogram of the prodigy in the Staten Hal in the Haege ... I heard people say the crowd went more wild during our performance <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />
they loved us .... and when the song lsd user came up everybody was running towards the gates like wild pigs
(except for the guy that wanted to kick my ass because I asked his girlfriend to show us her titties during the performance, he hated me )
ok ... i`m getting of topic again (as usual)
... I will give ya my set-up
hardware :
Kurzweil k2500s with kdfs and fiberwires connection
Egosys waveterminal 9460 conected to the kurzweil with fiberwire
Roland s1500 studio amplifier
PIII 1000 Mhz with 512 MB internal memory and 60 Gb HD
Spirit absolute 2 monitors
AKG S1000 microphone
Harmonix Golden throat (with to much noise and a loud hiss)
Yamaha DX100
software :
Fruityloops
Steinberg Wavelab 4
Delaydots spectral plugins
Fractal tune smithy
every possible freeware vsti or vst-e or direct x effect out there

I once arranged me a volunteer with beautiful long blond hair
I told him he was not a "real" gabber .... I couldn't care less who was real ... just wanted a fun thing for the show
I talked him into letting his hair be shaved of on stage ( I am such a jerk )
because he wanted to be "real" he agreed to do it (for free by the way)
we placed him on a throne and we shaved him bold during the intro.
after that we placed him on the middle of the stage and we treated him like a king
however ... I have never understood how people can give up there free will so easily.
I'm not a number ... I'm a free man.

ok, here goes ...
"a : who am i / what have i done ... "
I'm Simon - born during the Cuban Missile Crisis in Feb 1962 which makes me 40. Took up guitar at age 9, formed first band at age 13 - sorta Velvet Underground meets Earth Wind and Fire (yars really !?!?) ...
.... played guitar and keyboards in various bands (none, unfortunately, worth remembering!) until age 24 in Australia, USA and Germany ... worked as a stripper for this weird telegram company, sold large rubber penises at a sex aid shop, ummm bit of telephone market research work ...
lived in (West) Berlin for two years in the mid 80s, ripped off by German record company, legal action, stranded in the Swiss Alps at same beautiful little studio that the record company wouldn't pay ...
back to Berlin, formed a duo with a viola player from the Berlin Philharmonic, released two CDs under the name Frame-Cut-Frame on Sub Rosa records (you can find them deep within http://www.subrosa.net/ ) .... me by this time on sampler (the Emax !), percussion and other bits ...
back to Australia 1988, did some performance art stuff, working professionally as a film sound designer / composer ... started making short films , won lots of awards for a 1991 short film and travelled to lots of glamorous film festivals - New York , Sundance etc. ....
gave up music (!?!?!) , spent four years researching and writing an OTT feature film (part musical, thriller, historical dramaetc. etc.) which never got made ...
late 90s ... worked as a script editor / film critic / assessor for government film body ...
went back to music (phew!) .... had a brief period of pop fame/stardom in Australia (mentioned this on another thread) where I became this drag simulacrum of a right-wing, racist female Australian politician ... (see http://mitpress.mit.edu/journals/DRAM/4 ... bogad.html for a pretty funny account of this in a New York academic journal ) released two songs made of edited sound bytes of her voice, dressed as her and ran against her in a federal election in 1998 ...
At 38 i got my first ever full-time job, university lecturer in Digital Media .. specifically running the sound area in the art school
b : what do i do at the moment ...
The above job, which is driving me a bit crazy. Fulltime work ! What ???
But i've built my first ever home studio, playing with sorta deep housey instrumental stuff, all software and a Roland PC-70 keyboard ...
Single gay man, single for three years, have a one year old son who lives with his mum and her girlfriend, but i see him as much as possible ..... he's the big surprise in my life, but definitely the best ..
c : what is my goal in life ...
to see my son as happy as possible, and not to sit still for too long ..
d : i am interested in ...
learning to play percussion properly so that I don't hurt my hands so much.
That's it !
