It's an app that let's you design your own control surfaces, and plug in MIDI hardware using the USB Camera Connection Kit or send messages via WiFi.

Standout Features:
★ Design & save your own MIDI controllers by dragging and dropping sliders, buttons and more where you want them to create personalised control surfaces
★ Native MIDI Device support - connect compatible devices via the Camera Connection Kit and your iPad becomes a proper MIDI control surface with almost zero latency
★ Send messages over Wi-Fi with automatic setup (requires free software DSMI Server for Mac, Windows or Linux)
★ Several different control types - Add sliders, knobs, buttons (momentary or latched), drum-pads, X-Y controllers, transport controls and preset-jump buttons
★ Easily change the settings of each control - CC number, note number, minimum & maximum range, size & label
★ Standard & neon control themes to skin controls
★ Multi touch - control multiple knobs/sliders etc at once
★ In-app brightness control allows dimming of the screen to very low levels for performance
★ Full screen mode to reduce distractions
★ Controls snap to each other to help create aligned layouts

Also coming in a future update will be import/export of control presets via the web/email.

IS this app similar to touchosc?

Will the app also require pure data to be installed on pcs?

Yep it is kind of similar to touchOSC. I had someone else ask me that and here's what i wrote then: http://iosmidi.com/apps/midi-touch/#comment-15
Well I think the ability to make the controllers on the device itself is pretty important. It means you can quickly make designs for each task you are working on, and test them in real time.

Also (at time of writing) TouchOSC does not appear to support MIDI hardware or the new MIDI Network Sessions (both only just introduced) so the latency may not be as robust. I expect them to update quickly though! They make great apps, I encourage everyone to check them out.

Also, TouchOSC is a slightly different beast in that it's more OSC based, which is something we are looking at with MIDI Touch if there is enough interest.

Thanks for the feedback on MIDI Monitor!
Not sure what you mean by pure data.. to connect with a PC over WiFi you can use DSMidiWifi (http://code.google.com/p/dsmi/) which is free.

I'll PM you your promo code!

for pc's, in order to use touchosc you had to install dsmidi server and pure data.

from what I understand, pure data was necessary to convert the osc data to midi so that the host could understand/read the information coming from the ipad (similar to osculator on apple).

For custom setups, the layouts/routings/assignments had to be designed in pure data.

I know there's been some big developments with ios 4.2 that may have changed this middle step (core midi allows ipad to spit midi out directly?) and iosmidi seems to be optimised for this recent update.

Oh ok, yeah for PC's you will need DSMidiWiFi. For custom setups you make them in the app, on the device itself, so no need for Pure Data.

With 4.2 (that my the apps require), you can plug compatible MIDI hardware directly into the iPad using the USB Camera Connection Kit. Midi Touch and Midi Monitor send out pure MIDI messages directly to your hardware/software.

Thanks a lot! But it seems like promo codes only work in the US (I'm in Sweden). Damn! Well, good luck to next poster..

I'm in Australia so I have the same problem. You need to open a US iTunes account then you can claim the codes - google "open us itunes account". Works a treat.

It worked!

Without having looked into the program, just a few quick questions that come to my mind:

1. Are you planning to have some kind of forum or archive where users can share their templates? That would really increase the power of this app IMHO. And are there any templates for well known DAWs and/or synths included or planned?

2. Is there any way to send customizable MIDI using the tilt function of the iPad, or in the future? That would be really nice. And maybe even using the mic as some kind of breath controller (Like the Ocarina app).

3. For drumpads, is it possible to make some kind of 'fake velocity' function, i.e. the higher up you touch them, the harder you hit?

Thanks!

Glad it worked for you!

1. Yes, definitely. Can't say when, but it's coming. There is a bug fix update in review now, email sharing will be in the update after that for sure. After that we want to add a system inside the app (like a mini browser) where everyone can download/share presets.

2 & 3. Tilt functionality is not in at the moment, but will be added in a future update. Same with drumpads - I'm just trying to work out the best way to implement it. I might end up with a few options.

Really really cool. Thanks for the quick reply.

I appreciate the promo code. I've been able to successfully integrate this with my windows system (using dsmidi and midi yoke). I've worked up a simple template for Fxpansions Geist very easily within the midi touch app and the midi learn function in the program. This is going to be a good one.
