Now OP-X Pro II crashes completely. Even after reinstalling I can't load it into Reaper anymore without a crash. BTW: this plugin asks for a serial number AGAIN even BEFORE I reinstalled it. Something very strange is happening here. I didn't install it on my new 64Bit quad core machine with Windows 7 yet. It runs well for a few days on Win XP, 32 Bit.

Why don't you email Sonic Projects on this, Peter could of asked you to PM him though when he last posted.

FWIW I don't use Reaper, but Cubase 5 on XP 32bit and have never had a problem, Reaper can be downloaded by SP for them to test the plugin, so they have no excuse not to test it and it's cheap as chips to buy...

Okay, now I know what causes the trouble. I mistakenly set the audio latency buffer on my M-Audio 24/96 to 4096 samples. It seems that OP-X Pro II can't handle this, for whatever reason. 64 samples as well as 128 and 256 samples works fine. I didn't test values in between so far.

Ah, thanks for reporting :-) In fact I thought it must have to do something with drivers and buffers; this is where OP-X PRO-II is vulnerable;

It's important to use real ASIO drivers (and not any junk MME/Direct-X/ASIO Multimedia/WDM ones), and use a reasonable buffer size setting; don't expect a crowded session to work with a 32 samples buffer setting unlike you have a core i7 with RME Hammerfall, and also don't use higher settings than 1024 (it won't make the performance any better); as far as I'm concerned I'm mostly working with a fixed 512 samples buffer size on medicore machines, which works for both playing and mixing, so no need to switch buffers all the time; on higher end machines with Hammefall/Core i7 I'm using a fixed 256 samples

Nevertheless I tested Reaper in depth in the meantime (only read the post above now), and it has worked fine, in fact the same as with all other tested host so far (which include Cubase 5 and SX 1, Live 7 & 8, Sonar, Protools 8, SaviHost, MiniHost and now Reaper), and recorded the results to a video as usual:

Here are all other tests done so far, often with the exact same test arrangement:

Cubase 5 - video:

Live 8 - video:

Protools 8 - video:

Reaper 3 - video:

SaviHost:

Sonar: successfully tested too (but no video available)
NI Kore: Has been reported to work

The main difference I've noticed so far between all those sequencers is the behaviour when a session/midi arrangement is stopped in the middle of playing, and behaviour on looping; Cubase and Protools stop audio smoothly (by sending all note offs) and loop artefact free, Reaper is not bad too, but somehow less smooth on stopping in the middle of a midi file with a short audio interrupt; Sonar has the worst behaviour here, often making arpeggios hang (so probably not sending proper all notes off), and too discovered some other general midi bugs (e.g. on importing multitrack midi and moving midi tracks); Live performs well, but sometimes can produce crashes on looping (which cubase and protools don't with the exact same arrangement) - the best of all still is Cubase (anyway the best sequencer available imho, but that's too up to personal preference), closely followed by Protools and Live

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your clarification and testing. Of course I use an ASIO driver since I have an M-Audio 24/96 so there's no need for any Direct-X or WDM crap. However, I tend to play the tracks live into my DAW, so a buffer size of 512 samples causes a bit too much latency for my taste. But, as I said, 128 samples works fine.

Concerning the looping issue I ran into, I've to do some more tests. At the moment I avoid looping, which is a bit inconvenient sometimes.

Peter,
What cubase 5 version are you using in the video ,x32 or x64?

Post

Hi bill - it's x32, version 5.0.1, in win 7 64, with an rme hammerfall 9632 @ 256 samples, core i7 920 (stock speed);

It also has been reported to work in x64 with jBridge; I have not tried the new internal bit-bridge in 5.5 so far, maybe it even will work with this one (since steinberg says it has been enhanced)

This sequencer/soundcard/os/cpu combination has the best performance I've ever seen - OP-X PRO-II mostly only shows a load of 1% per instance :-)

The Protools 8 (m-powered) that's installed too on the same machine even outperforms a protools hd 7 - 900 instances of bombfactory bf76, and 400 instances of d-verb, both @ 256 samples! :-) Since the coming protools 9 will be open for all soundcards it then too can be used with the hammerfall, and this again should increase performance...

OP-X PRO-II btw works well in Prorools 8 (with fxpansion wrapper)

Post

Do the Hammerfall audio card really improve the performance in such a significant way?

Post

I have the impression, yes, but have not done any comparison tests; it for sure generates the least overhead on cpu of all audio drivers I've worked with so far (I don't know all of course) when using low latency settings

but for me this is not the only reason to use an rme card (m-audio is not bad too); it's also the total mix software which allows to route everything to everywhere with zero latency and zero cpu; e.g., since protools 8 (still) needs its own souncard I've simply connected its s/pdif out to the rme and use total mix to route it directly to the analog output; like this both protools and cubase play back over the same card :-)

plus the hdsp 9632 has all connections you'll ever need - analog i/o, an independent headphone out, s/pdif optical & coaxial, adat, aes/ebu, midi i/o; all in one card without any external box

but if you're on a budget, an m-audio 2496 is a great card, especially for the money; good converters and good drivers; all the web-audio examples have been done on a system with that card

Post

thanks Peter,
I'm using Cubase x64 5.5.1 whith line6 tone port Di-G.
Os is win7 x64 ,i7 920,asus p6t mobo.I also have cubase x32.
Mabe I'll try jbridge in x32 with my64 bit samplers.I'm gonna try opx pro II demo . the reaktor opx is great.But reaktor is shaky in c5 x64.
