I never had the guts to handle the RCM technique, but there is some amazing pan envelopes in this synth (at least the TG77 sound module version, but i asume there's no major differences)

I'll be glad to see though, how a similar technique would have likely been improved with this new softsynth, I'm really curious, tweaking these FM based synths from early neinties wasn't an easy job...

Nice idea! Instead of FM modulating a sample i could use a sample as FM source. I guess i could get some nice formant-like sounds when i set the sample key-follow to 0.

Markus, yes, it's a nice technique. It's not really very flexible, as it's all about distortion, however, if the patch is done right, it can add some cool overtones. Shame I have my SY77 in storage at the moment, as I have a patch which demonstrates the power of feeding a sample into an algorithm very well.

It's good to know that you are interested in this, as adding something like Yamaha's RCM to ElectraX will make it even more exciting, and I bet your take on this could give us new unexpected features. However, even without this, ElectraX is at the top of soft synth world.

Yes, very much so. But then, FM has always been great at adding colour via velocity. RCM just adds another dynamic layer ( layers again, eh?

Indeed, as far as i can judge, it needed much patience and tact in sound design to do something really usuable

During the years i got quite experienced with FM. It's very difficult to handle. Especially if you try to mimic natural sounds.
One thing that you must note as a sound designer is the fact, that FM adds additional harmonic content - which is somehow the opposite of substractive sound design where you thin out the spectrum with a filter. That's why it sounds better with waveforms with less overtones. Use continous or very bandlimited waveforms.
The send levels mostly sound best on quite low values or very minimalistic changes.
